A Brush with Death (Penny Brannigan Mysteries) ReviewThe two Penny Brannigan detective novels written by Elizabeth J. Duncan are treats for the reader. I just finished reading the second and enjoyed it thoroughly. The plots are easy to follow. There are off-beat characters ranging from the detective, Penny, who is a manicurist, to Victoria, her harp-playing sleuthing partner. The writing is a bit stilted as are the conversations. But the core of these books lies in the creation of the Welsh village and countryside. The descriptions are beautiful and make the reader who has never been to Wales, wish to go there. There is also an underlying theme: the importance of relationships. In Llanelen's quiet community, social lives are explored. The happiest relationships belong to the minister and his wife, lesbian partners, and an elderly patriarch who outlives his beloved wife.
