The Magic Brush: A Story of Love, Family, and Chinese Characters". It is indeed a lovely story, celebrating the close bonds between the younger and older generation, as portrayed in a Chinese family, and the wonderful things to be discovered when one is given the opportunity to learn something fascinating.
Young Jasmine and her little brother Tai-Tai are happy when their grandfather, Agong, comes to live with them. However, Jasmine feels lonely with no playmate to amuse her or play with. Then one day, Agong invites Jasmine to come and learn something new - Chinese calligraphy! Before long, Jasmine is exploring fascinating new worlds through the fine art of calligraphy, with magic and fantasy blended in through Agong's deft storytelling skills (and Jasmine's flights of imagination).
Sadly, Jasmine's grandfather falls ill, and when he is no longer in her life, Jasmine becomes despondent and lonely once again. Perhaps Tai-Tai is now ready for Jasmine to lead him into a new world? This story celebrates the richness of Chinese culture, the love between grandparent and grandchildren, and the life experiences and skills passed down from one generation to the next. The vibrant illustrations capture the gentle nuances of familial relationships and the 'magical' world of Chinese calligraphy.
