George de Forest Brush: The Indian Paintings ReviewI hadn't heard of Brush, but was intrigued by the cover and bought the book on a whim. Brush was a student of gerome and you can see the elder master's influence in Brush's delicate and subtle rendering of form and in his precise and rythmic contours. But Brush also displays a refined use of warm and cool color and a wonderful softness of edge that one doesn't see in gerome. Perhaps most striking about Brush's paintings are his bold, elegant compositions in light and dark. Light figures emerge palpably from the darkness and dark ones are surrounded by a sea of light. His work is somewhat similar to the great Brandywine illustrators Pyle and Wyeth in this respect. The book itself is well done with good quality printing. The catalog entries are on the small side - most have large margins, and there are only a few details. There are, however, a half-dozen 2-page full-bleed images that serve as chapter breaks. On the whole, it's a beautiful book.George de Forest Brush: The Indian Paintings Overview
