In Search of the Fuller Brush Man ReviewHave you ever obsessed about something so much in life that it was impossible to explain your odd obsession to anyone else without them probably giving you a funny look or rolling their eyes at you? Or has there ever been anything in life that you just had to do for yourself (or possibly for someone else) despite the possibility of any repercussions from others? That's exactly where Sean Marcum finds himself in the center of Douglas Carlyle's book, In Search of the Fuller Brush Man. Yep, it's a strange title that will probably make you think of Red Skelton, but also at the center of Carlyle's book is a story with lots of heart. Sean is obsessed with the last three words written in his dead mother's diary: Fuller Brush Man. He believes they are a secret message intended just for him.
He spends hours on the internet researching the company and the movie. He studies the credits of the movie, dates, and locations. His obsession is so intense that he falls asleep at his computer almost every night, in an office filled with useless Fuller Brush items.
This all causes great frustration with Sean's wife, Dixie, and also his daughter. Add to that the stress that Sean is having to deal with while working for the family car dealership. There's a commercial to shoot and a fundraiser to plan for, and then Sean gets a phone call notifying him that his high school sweetheart, Kim, has passed away from breast cancer.
Despite the demands of his family and his job, Sean feels he needs to go to pay his respects to Kim, and hopes another clue will reveal itself to the odd mystery bestowed upon him by his mother since Kim and his mother had remained close.
I have to admit this is not a book I would have ever picked up in a bookstore and bought on a whim to read. It's "mystery" aspect just wasn't enough to capture my attention, but after reading it I learned that Sean's search for the meaning behind the last words in his mother's journal is just a minor driving force behind Carlyle's book.
Sure, the reader eventually wants to know the meaning just as much as Sean does, and may be surprised with the results. But the true foundation of the book is respect and love. It's about the bond that a man shares with a woman - whether that be while courting each other in high school or eventually in marriage.
Carlyle creates real characters, layering them with complexities that we all know. Complexities of the heart. He even acknowledges a very healthy sex life between Dixie and Sean. I admit I blushed a bit at first, but later I appreciated it. It was a "peeping Tom" look into a marriage, a view that too often we don't see on the written page without sex being the middle of the conflict. Sean even goes to work and jokes about it to make Dixie's father uneasy.
It all comes very natural for Carlyle in a book that is impeccably polished thanks to his editor, Sandra R. Hickman (who gets credit on the book's Amazon page), and because the book is based on real life events that happened to Carlyle including his own high school sweetheart's death and the infamous last words of his mother.
If you are in search of a nice slow read with well drawn out characters and story lines that you can easily connect to and ponder long after the last page, might I suggest In Search of the Fuller Brush Man. It is a book with clean heart and truth that any person who knows the value of love and respect will appreciate. Well done!In Search of the Fuller Brush Man Overview
