Close Brush With Death: A Lawton Close Mystery ReviewThink Holmes and Watson, with Watson being the one you miss most when you have to put the book down. Lawton T. Close is a brilliant but neurotic lawyer who solves crimes by relying on someone else to do his dirty work -- namely, Max "Man of Action" Kelly. Thanks to Kelly, "Close Brush" is longer on wit than it is on suspense. which is not to say that the mystery, about stolen art, isn't compelling.
As with all good detective novels, "Close Brush" contains enough of the genre's lovable conceits -- a cast of characters who are at once annoying and amusing, an intriguing caper or two, and a hapless hero being swept along by circumstances and the siren songs of some noiresque dames ("...languor" is a word I've never used before...I have been trying to find some place to stick it in ever since. She was the place.") -- to make you feel comfortable. But because our hero, Max Kelly, actually is in love with life, and with cars, baseball, hot buttered muffins, the New York Times, art, sailing, guns, and Italian food, reading "Close Brush" is like renting a place in the Hamptons for the summer. Classy, breezy, with some fun surprises tucked in the picnic basket of pleasantries.
People who actually live in the far Hamptons will enjoy this romp through the `hood. The rest of us can only drool.Close Brush With Death: A Lawton Close Mystery Overview
