Relentless Brush Strokes: A Memoir ReviewI read this book a few months ago and finished it very quickly. I honestly couldn't put it down. As a South Indian myself, I saw so many parallels between the book's characters and my own family. When I read this, I got a sense of nostalgia and wonder at my own culture.The way the author uses accurate depictions of South Indian traditions and the metaphor of painting to show family values is wonderful. She uses this book as a glorious tribute to her father, a man whose life can teach a plethora of lessons.
What's more interesting is the way that she did not choose to change what I found familiar about South India into something more understandable to a western audience. For example, many words within the book are in Tamil and the history in the book is rooted in India. However, she takes all of that and explains it in a way that doesn't simplify it for an audience that does not know about it. Instead, she uses it to accentuate her characters and settings, giving the book a real sense of honesty.
I enjoyed this book and know that whether you are a South Indian or not, you will find something to relate to in it.Relentless Brush Strokes: A Memoir Overview
