Yuri's Brush with Magic ReviewHaving just finished Maureen Crane Wartski's "Yuri's Brush with Magic", I want to comment on the quality of the writing, the development of the characters and the absorbing movement of the story whether it is read by children from ten and up or by adults. Ms. Wartski is an excellent writer who has written young adult fiction that has dealt with problems of refugees, immigration and special needs of children. She does not shirk from presenting dilemmas that are difficult but also realistic even for children under twelve. Right from the first chapter of "Yuri's Brush with Magic", Ms. Wartski manages to incorporate issues of impending loss, mixed racial heritage, and anger without incurring maudlin reactions or undue sentimentality in her readers. We soon become entirely absorbed in the many characters, whether they are sympathetically portrayed or not. They are all real for us and will be so for her younger readers as well. That there is potential for change in both circumstances and individuals brings hope to us all. Mistaken assumptions can be corrected. Connections can be made. The world of nature can be comforting and is described in poignant, poetic, even fantastical ways. Yet the ending is not overly optimistic, leaving room for uncertainty; for such is life!
