Brush Strokes ReviewIn Alvin Lloyd Alexander Horn's debut novel, Brush Strokes, thereader follows Tylowe Dandridge through valleys and hills in his
quest for love.
The story begins with a trip down Tylowe's memory lane set in
Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada. He takes you to a time in his
life when his closest friend, Elliot Piste, aided in his deepest
heart break. After parting ways with Elliot and the love of his
life, Tylowe returns home to Seattle, Washington and consumes
himself in his artistic endeavors. He was an up-and-coming
photographer and poet who became known for his customized romantic
gift card collection which showcased both of these talents. Every
now and then he would take on modeling gigs to supplement his income.
Tylowe accepted an offer to model at Eternity Pseudonym Artistry
School which was located in Vancouver. Upon his return there, he was
flooded with not only memories of his lost love but also
reminded of the love he sought and his loneliness.
While reading a book in a cafe in Vancouver, he was approached by a
woman who inquired about the author. Tylowe, being quite the
wordsmith, was for the first time in his life speechless. Was this
love approaching him? Could she end years of meaningless sex and
lonely evenings for him? This lady had Tylowe stumped in more ways
than one. Just as suddenly as she appeared, she left and they did
not even exchange names. This reminded him again of how he longed
for a soul mate.
A chance meeting brought Tylowe and the mystery lady face-to-face
once again. He learned her name and her history which proved to put
him in point blank range with the ghosts of his past. One ghost
being his old friend Elliot. Would falling in love with her be worth
the confrontations with his past? Would loving her cost Tylowe even
more heartache? All questions are answered as the reader follows
Tylowe's brush strokes.
This story is full of colorful phrases and poetry meant to provoke
thought and emotion. Horn developed characters that jumped from his
pages into your imagination through his storytelling. This is also
the negative side of the novel. Horn provided so much storytelling
that I was unable to fully submit to the characters. While I
understood their motives, their voices were at times whispers when
they should have roared. Aside from this element and a few
grammatical errors and typos, Horn weaves a tangled web of love,
lies, deceit, and revenge that sweetens the palates of individuals
who admire the art of words.
I have recommended Brush Strokes to those who have a love of poetry,
art, and romance.
