Brush the Summer By ReviewBrush The Summer By is the story of Max Murphy, all-star shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals, who marries his high school sweetheart, and lives out his dream of playing for the Cardinals. The time is the 1959-1960 season. Max's best friend is a black teammate, one of the few blacks playing in those days.
The Cardinals eventually have a good year, but not before Max's life is threated by the Chicago Mafia. The Ku Klux Klan is also mysteriously on the edges of the story.
The world of show business and politics also intersects with baseball--everybody seems interested in Max and his new wife, who turns out to be a talented singer. Even John F. Kennedy, Presidential Candidate, makes a brief appearance.
The story comes to a swift climax when one of Max's friends is shot trying to protect him. Despite the F.B.I.being on the case, Max takes matters in his own hands. He meets with head of the Chicago Mafia, Don Spiletto.
Max manages to do the Don a favor, and learns the Mob isn't out to get him. But someone still wants him dead--an old enemy, Josh Allen, head of the Ku Klux Klan.
The killer ending is best left for the reader to discover. Along the way, there's lots of period flavor and reminders of the pop culture of the 50's. My favorite reference was to the underrated Connie Francis, the hearbreaking singer of songs like "Who's Sorry Now?" And the author reminds us occasionally of how different America was in those early days of the Civil Rights Movement.
Even if you don't follow baseball,I think you'll like this tale of Max and his loyal teammates. And the Mafia stuff is an added bonus--fans of the Sopranos and The Godfather will recognize Don Spiletto.
And, by the way, this would make a terrific movie.Brush the Summer By Overview
