Pro Expression Blend 4 ReviewThe release of four Expression Blend versions since 2007 is implicit admission that coding WPF is daunting even for those who successfully traverse its steep learning curve. Andrew Troelsen employs the teach-by-example method to provide a well-crafted coverage of Blend in his new guide, Pro Expression Blend 4. Troelsen introduces Blend through clear illustrations detailing major components of the Blend integrated development environment before moving into numerous examples of how Blend simplifies crafting arbitrary shapes and objects. He then devotes Chapter 3 to illustrating how easy it is for Blend to animate such shapes and objects. From the well-presented foundation of his first three chapters Troelsen segues into a discussion of control specification by showing how Blend allows users to define controls via drag and drop, manage their positioning and specify the actions to be performed by each control. Because different controls typically have such features as fill colors and text characteristics in common, Troelsen illustrates how Blend enables the user to convert these commonalities into WPF resources, styles and templates.
Managing Blend's handling of templates and data binding can be daunting to a designer such as me because Blend is not yet mature. Being a work in progress, Blend has numerous IDE features that remain difficult to use. Microsoft's usability people should give them serious attention. These shortcomings in Blend undermine the effectiveness of Troelsen's method of teaching-by-example. Because of this Troelsen's examples, while well selected and perform exactly as promised, do not always help the designer undertake customizations not covered by the examples.
Given that Troelsen provides a very thoughtful approach to mastering Blend, I look forward to a second edition in a couple years in which he covers the next, more mature Blend release. A second edition will give him the opportunity to more extensively cover IDE activities needed to craft customized controls.
A final comment relates to the author himself. Troelsen's personal email address is provided in the Introduction. Having a couple of questions, I emailed him. He responded within two days and immediately responded to a follow-on query. Very impressive.Pro Expression Blend 4 Overview
