Foolproof Wood Finishing: For Those Who Love to Build and Hate to Finish ReviewThis would be a very good choice for someone looking for a comprehensive introduction to how to prep, stain, and finish furniture. There is a real wealth of information and it is presented very clearly.
But for all the info on furniture finishing, I was disappointed by the coverage of other basic woodworking projects. For example, there's nothing about what finishes are safe for cutting boards, wooden bowls, or children's toys. And I would have welcomed something that talked specifically about finishes for shop furniture. There also is nothing on spray finishes, which is mildly frustrating given that the author mentions how much more convenient they are than the brush-on and wipe-on finishes she does cover.
I also found the author's style a little distracting. A bit heavy on the exclamation points and the quotation marks and the folksy stories. Not a big deal, really, but it detracted from my enjoyment in reading it somewhat.
It's an outstanding book for a slightly different reader than me. If I had it to do over, I'd get another one instead.Foolproof Wood Finishing: For Those Who Love to Build and Hate to Finish Overview

The Furniture Doctor ReviewThis is a 'bible' for the average amateur and full of good tips for both the experienced and fussy wood worker. I've used it for more than 30 years. Whenever I have a problem I start my research with this book, and I usually come back to it again after looking at a number of other sources. There are suggestions that you'll not find anywhere else. The humor is a delight. However Grotz wrote most of this before the development of many current ideas about how to preserve antiques. I imagine that employing some of his suggestions might lead to a reduction in the market value of an item. However, I don't think it will ever lead to a reduction in your personal enjoyment of the piece.The Furniture Doctor Overview

Tauntons Complete Illustrated Guide To Finishing ReviewAt over 300 pages of superbly illustrated information, this book is the new bible on wood finishing. The words "Complete" and "Illustrated" in the title tell it all.
Just about everything you need to know about finishing from basics to advanced is covered. Every topic is illustrated with full-color photos and line drawings when needed.
Plenty of hints, off-page references and guidance.
Topics are covered in anywhere from a half-page with three photos to whole chapters. Jeff and his wife, Susan, the photographer, have gone out of their way to show every process and product talked about. Every chapter is organized the same way, which may be the way of Taunton's new, "Complete Illustrated Guide to..."
If you are only going to buy one book on finishing, or if you have a whole shelf full, you need to buy and read this book.

The Weekend Refinisher ReviewI bought a chest of drawers in a consignment shop that was dirty, scratched and had old stickers slapped on the drawers. What drew me to it, however, was a carving on the top drawer of a lighthouse on the New England coast. I could refinish that, I thought, and I bought the chest. Once home with my treasure, I despaired. Did I need to rent a sander to get all the gunk off? How would I preserve the carving?
Bruce Johnson's book got me through it all. This book is very well-written explaining what techniques to use and all the materials you need to buy to do a good job refinishing furniture. The book takes you through making small repairs, removing old finish, staining, putting a protective coat on, and preserving the finish. Johnson has a helpful, humorous tone throughout telling about refinishing errors he made and how readers can avoid them.
The most invaluable part of the book is that each chapter ends with a list of the materials you need to perform each step of the refinishing process. I took the book with me to my local Home Depot when shopping; I kept the book in a plastic bag nearby me when I was working on the chest for "what-do-I-do-now?" guidance. Thanks to Johnson, I found I could remove bad waterstains from the top of the chest with simple household bleach.
I finished my chest of drawers in 3 weekends and it looks so good my husband is promising to fold his underwear so it won't stick out of the drawers anymore!The Weekend Refinisher Overview
