Ike Taiga and Tokuyama Gyokuran: Japanese Masters of the Brush (Philadelphia Museum of Art) ReviewThis is the catalog for the 2007 show (in Philadelphia, oddly enough) of works by the husband and wife team of Ike Taiga and Tokuyama Gyokuran, 18th century Japanese painters and calligraphers (and poets). There were 208 works by the two included in the show (and in the book). Taiga was one of the founders of the Nanga school in Japan (based on the Chinese literati school), a great painter and calligrapher. Some of his work is almost abstract. And he did finger paintings too (there's an explanation included). His wife was extraordinary too.The paintings (and reproductions) are wonderful. If you are interested in Japanese painting and/or calligraphy, this book is very highly recommended.Ike Taiga and Tokuyama Gyokuran: Japanese Masters of the Brush (Philadelphia Museum of Art) Overview
