My First Book of Chinese Calligraphy ReviewThis is a great book for introducing kids to Chinese calligraphy. The book is nicely printed on high-quality paper and shows a sweet little girl. It discusses the origins of Chinese characters, stroke order and styles of calligraphy, among other things. I would not recommend it for grown-ups but it's a great tool for kids, to engage their interest. My First Book of Chinese Calligraphy Overview

Japanese Ink Painting: Lessons in Suiboku Technique ReviewThis book is designed for beginners to learn the art of Suiboku; teaching about the tools used, the basics (inlcuding the four main traditional topics), and continuing with well-illustrated lessons. It even includes a bit of history. The book is well written, easy to understand, and does not 'talk down' to the reader.
While ink and wash painting did develop first in China in the seventh century, it was introduced to Japan by Zen Buddhist monks in the fourteenth century and evolved to differ somewhat from similar techniques in other parts of Asia (including those in China). Chinese ink and water is often more literal, depicting landscapes with realistic textures and details whereas Japanese ink and water emphasizes the soul rather than realism.
To seriousthinker, I appreciate your desire to set the record straight, but you are mistaken. Suiboku and Sumi-e are the pronunciations of the Japanese words for ink and water painting and Japanese ink and water painting does, indeed, exist. The techniques originated in China, but have evolved many characteristics unique to Japanese style just as watercolor painting in the west has evolved characteristics unique of watercolor painting as it originated in China. Yet, study of western watercolor painting would not accurately depict its origins in China just as study of Japanese ink and wash painting would not accurately depict its originis in China.
As for Nihonga, that is a very specific type of watercolor painting using colored mineral pigments called Iwa Enogu. It is yet another Japanese evolution of watercolor painting (which originated in China even before ink and wash painting). Yes, ink and wash painting originated in China, but Japanese ink and wash is not the same thing as Chinese ink and wash and the two should be studied as separate and unique. This book is a great place to start.Japanese Ink Painting: Lessons in Suiboku Technique Overview

The Sumi-E Book ReviewIn all honesty, Sumi-E is best learned from a teacher in a live workshop. The combination of exacting brushstrokes, meditative attitude & free, almost unconscious, expression is difficult to take out of a book alone. Sumi-E has an intimate connection to Zen practices. But that said, in the absence of a teacher, Yolanda Mayhall's book is the best I've seen. Her purpose here is to get you started on the right path - & in Sumi-E, the right path means everything.
The "Four Gentleman" brushstrokes & their basic variations are the substance of The Sumi-E Book. Bamboo, Wild Orchid, Chrysanthemum & Plum Branch represent "all the forms in the universe." One could endlessly write haiku on those four natural forms, so why not paintings, too?
This book is as clear as a mountain brook & as gentle as a breeze. Successfully achieving a bamboo branch & leaf (& you will succeed) is enough to draw you onward down that right path. Even children can grasp the basics of these strokes using inexpensive brushes & watercolors, & they will wonder at the simplicity of it.
Just as poets return again & again to haiku in order to sharpen their observation skills & sense of economy, all artists will reap large benefits from the spare, mono-chromatic beauty of Sumi-E that will enrich your other mediums & quiet your mind as well.
Highly recommended.

Chinese Brush Painting: A Complete Painting Kit for Beginners ReviewI would like to say that I don't usually gush. In fact I'm generally pretty critical in my reviews. That said, this book is beautiful, and more than I could have hoped for. Beyond the basics kit as listed above, there is a booklet that is thirty-two pages long. It has fifteen projects in it that are described stroke by stroke. When I was a kid I had an drawing book that walked the reader through drawing a picture by starting with a rectangle, then you drew a circle on one corner, etc., until you have an elephant or whatever. This is sort of on those lines, but the elegance and simplicity of the finished picture is beyond my ability to describe. Lucy Wang does exactly the style of Chinese watercolor that I most admire, where with a few simple brush strokes she captures life, movement, expression and character. Of course, I can't begin to replicate her paintings, but by mimicking her strokes, I can get the idea of the repetoire of brushstrokes available to me. I'm going to keep practicing until my practice pictures look recognizable and then I feel I will have enough technique to try to develop my own style. All this from a 32 page booklet! Yes, either I am delusional, or this is a really good book. The kit is simple, but everything is good quality. Only five sheets of watercolor paper didn't last vey long, but it's the standard stuff you can get at any art store, or even Fred Meyers (is F.M. a national chain? -- sorry, I don't know.) I am grateful to the earlier reviewer who suggested gettting newsprint paper to practice on. It doesn't absorb the same as watercolor paper, but it's just fine for early doodles. The paints are just standard watercolors, but the brushes are good quality, or better than good enough for me, anyway.Chinese Brush Painting: A Complete Painting Kit for Beginners Overview

Ike Taiga and Tokuyama Gyokuran: Japanese Masters of the Brush (Philadelphia Museum of Art) ReviewThis is the catalog for the 2007 show (in Philadelphia, oddly enough) of works by the husband and wife team of Ike Taiga and Tokuyama Gyokuran, 18th century Japanese painters and calligraphers (and poets). There were 208 works by the two included in the show (and in the book). Taiga was one of the founders of the Nanga school in Japan (based on the Chinese literati school), a great painter and calligrapher. Some of his work is almost abstract. And he did finger paintings too (there's an explanation included). His wife was extraordinary too.
The paintings (and reproductions) are wonderful. If you are interested in Japanese painting and/or calligraphy, this book is very highly recommended.Ike Taiga and Tokuyama Gyokuran: Japanese Masters of the Brush (Philadelphia Museum of Art) Overview

T. Mikami's Sumi Painting: Study of Japanese Brush Painting ReviewThis is an absolutely fabulous introduction to sumi painting. It is basic, it is simple, it describes the materials you will need, and gives you techniques that you can practice forever as they are fundamental... and key to your ability. Furthermore, this text gives the beginner a real sense of accomplishment early-on with its diagramed paintings you can attempt yourself. Mikami-sama has done a fabulous job with this book. I would easily recomend it to anyone interested in getting started with brush painting!T. Mikami's Sumi Painting: Study of Japanese Brush Painting Overview

Chinese Brush Painting Step By Step ReviewThe book is easy to read (and I'm not speaking English as mother tongue), clear plus pictures and paintings are gorgeous from cover till the last page. I find this book over and over again from my hand. Also contents are excellent, speaking of learning how to paint. Although I have taken one basic course in Chinese painting, it still gave me more information including the repetition of the basics. I only can recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the technique. I already bought one extra for a student of mine.Chinese Brush Painting Step By Step Overview

Traces of the Brush: The Art of Japanese Calligraphy ReviewThe authors' sincere appreciation of the art of shodou is convincingly mediated to the reader. Especially the colorful and illustrative praising of kana calligraphy impressed me.
The high-quality images of the ancient masterpieces play an important role occupying a plenty of page space.
Just remember that this is a book on history, attitudes and ways of looking at the japanese calligraphy. This in not a text on calligraphy techniques. Comprehensive instructions on shodou are excluded from this book.Traces of the Brush: The Art of Japanese Calligraphy Overview

Brush Meditation: A Japanese Way to Mind & Body Harmony ReviewI've been interested in Japanese painting and also brush writing for quite a few years. At the same time, I've also been fascinated by the idea of art as meditation. While I've read quite a few books that vaguely discuss how Japanese calligraphy is supposed to be "moving meditation," H. E. Davey's book is the first one I've read that clearly explains exactly how this takes place and how to start to use the brush in meditation.

Brush Meditation: A Japanese Way to Mind & Body Harmony not only deals with using Japanese calligraphy as a device with which to meditate, it does so in a manner that even people with no understanding of Japanese will be able to get something out of trying the exercises discussed. It seems to me, that you could apply the ideas in this book to most forms of art, and even in school, business, or family life, to arrive at a true understanding of calmness and personal harmony.

It's a useful book. I only wish it were longer. I hope the author comes out with a second, perhaps intermediate level, volume soon.Brush Meditation: A Japanese Way to Mind & Body Harmony Overview

The Simple Art of Chinese Brush Painting ReviewI have a rather extensive library of Chinese Brush painting books, and would only say a few are "must have", and this book truly falls into that category. The author does try to keep matters simple, and does a great job of making simple outstanding paintings. But besides the nice paintings, he shows several creative ways to use Chinese brush paintings, such as on fans, and lanterns, and on pine screens. Finally, he shows various poems of Chinese Calligraphy which appear to be rather easy to inscribe one's painting. I still have probably not done the book the justice it deserves. The Simple Art of Chinese Brush Painting Overview
