The Pen and Ink Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist (Watson-Guptill Materials and Techniques) ReviewThe is a wonderful book for intermediate to advanced pen and ink artists looking for a thorough explanation of materials and a great discussion of the methodology of creating fantastic pen and ink artwork. It is packed with a wide variety of examples that are sure to inspire you.
The book starts out with a large (almost 50 pages) and excellent overview of materials and tools. I love it that the author takes the time to discuss numerous brands of pens, inks and papers instead of just generalizing them.
The following section focuses on ink drawing techniques. There is a good discussion of gray tones, parallel lines, value changes, hatching, cross-hatching and patterns. Then there are a few demonstrations of brush techniques such as laying a wash and using white on toned paper. Mixed media demos mixing wax crayons and acrylic with ink are also here as well as scratchboard and practice exercises.
The basic elements of drawing follow, including things like texture, shape, volume, color, rhythm and scale. Next, drawing strategies are covered. There are no projects or any step-by-step techniques per se. Rather, the author shows you examples of his artwork with advice on his approach, concepts and techniques. I recommend this book for those with some pen & ink drawing experience seeking ideas, tips and inspiration. There is a good list of suppliers in the back.

I just haven't found such straightforward, detailed instruction such as this book offers. Even classroom instruction nowadays shows a preference for Micro-tech pens, not ink and nubs. This is enough to get you to the art store and home; onto paper right away. Especially if working alone or at a distance to classroom instruciton. If you are looking for more advanced, inspirational, and creative illustrations; this book is not for you-look elsewhere. The author gave a broad coverage of basic Chinese brushwork, supplies, and techniques. The illustrations are very straight forward, colorful, and easy to follow. The supplies that come with the book are really good and the cost for the total package is a great price. Chinese Brush Painting Techniques: A Beginner's Guide to Painting Birds and Flowers ReviewThis book covers the basic tool requirements, the six general rules governing paintings, and the four paragons inside of the first four chapters. The artist also has brush skill, adding to the overall effect.
The negatives - the book calls for colors... winsor cotman... 4 dollars a tube, which roughly adds to $30 in addition to the traditionally demanded ink stick, ink grinding stone, and brush(he suggests 2 brushes), and ink well(he suggests a water well and an 7 petal flower inkwell at least).
He also suggests newsprint as a cost effective solution... yet at 40lb which newsprint is, you need heavy painting felt under it to be useful. 100 sheet packs of rice paper from Yasumoto is probably a better idea.
In fact... the book is exceptional, and despite the chinese brush painting name, the Japanese manufacturer Yasumoto is quite possibly the perfect tool compliment. Yasumoto all-purpose brush small, Yasumoto grinding stone, Yasumoto ink stick, Yasumoto 100 sheet rice paper packs are all obtainable in America... whereas the decent art companies in China do not appear to have their products available to use in America.Chinese Brush Painting Techniques: A Beginner's Guide to Painting Birds and Flowers Overview

Chinese Brush Painting: A Complete Painting Kit for Beginners ReviewI would like to say that I don't usually gush. In fact I'm generally pretty critical in my reviews. That said, this book is beautiful, and more than I could have hoped for. Beyond the basics kit as listed above, there is a booklet that is thirty-two pages long. It has fifteen projects in it that are described stroke by stroke. When I was a kid I had an drawing book that walked the reader through drawing a picture by starting with a rectangle, then you drew a circle on one corner, etc., until you have an elephant or whatever. This is sort of on those lines, but the elegance and simplicity of the finished picture is beyond my ability to describe. Lucy Wang does exactly the style of Chinese watercolor that I most admire, where with a few simple brush strokes she captures life, movement, expression and character. Of course, I can't begin to replicate her paintings, but by mimicking her strokes, I can get the idea of the repetoire of brushstrokes available to me. I'm going to keep practicing until my practice pictures look recognizable and then I feel I will have enough technique to try to develop my own style. All this from a 32 page booklet! Yes, either I am delusional, or this is a really good book. The kit is simple, but everything is good quality. Only five sheets of watercolor paper didn't last vey long, but it's the standard stuff you can get at any art store, or even Fred Meyers (is F.M. a national chain? -- sorry, I don't know.) I am grateful to the earlier reviewer who suggested gettting newsprint paper to practice on. It doesn't absorb the same as watercolor paper, but it's just fine for early doodles. The paints are just standard watercolors, but the brushes are good quality, or better than good enough for me, anyway.Chinese Brush Painting: A Complete Painting Kit for Beginners Overview

I am trying to learn this art form and have watched DVDs and have a number of books on the subject, but this one is my favorite. It has the only information I could find on how to carve a seal stone. Chinese Brush Painting: An Academic Approach for Painting Flowers and Fish ReviewI have taken a few classes on Chinese brush painting and used several books. This book is the clearest and most comprehensive, and it cleared up some confusion I had from the classes.
The approach in this book is to teach the techniques of Chinese brush painting by starting with four classic flower subjects that introduce basic brush strokes and ways to load the brush for different effects. Then other flowers that use variations of these techniques are included. At first I thought the addition of fish in this book was odd, but it is based on similarity of techniques that are used. The final chapter on the backing process is the clearest I've seen. Throughout the book, each step is clearly described in the directions, accompanied by one or more photos to illustrate the process. The trouble shooting guide at the end is right on target for the difficulties that come up in working with the Chinese materials.
The illustrations are not only beautiful, but the detailed examples and line drawings make the intent of the instructions very clear. The detailed instructions are clear enough for a beginner to follow. The book also includes aesthetic `pointers' that are understandable and succinct, but I've found that it takes a great deal of practice for the hand to be able to accomplish what can be described so simply. The combination of clear instructions and descriptions of the aesthetic qualities the artist is striving to achieve makes this book useful for beginners yet it offers continuing challenges for more experienced artists.
This book is also valuable for enhancing the appreciation of this art form. The many completed paintings are beautiful and show a range of color and compositional possibilities. The photos of each flower as it grows in nature are also beautiful. I also liked the references to Chinese symbolism in each chapter and the connections to Chinese philosophy and classic texts.
