Wood Finishing Simplified: No Chemistry Just Beautiful Results (Popular Woodworking) ReviewWish, wish, wish we had read this book before we started our project !!! It would have saved us a LOT of time, some money, and the end result would have been much better.
My wife and I wanted to refinish our kitchen and utility room cabinets. 53 oak doors and drawers, plus the cabinetry! We had refinished some oak bedroom furniture and a desk many years ago using one of those "do it all in one step" products. So we had some limited experience with refinishing, but did not really know that much about what we were doing. We certainly did not know which of the new products to get from the hardware store to save us time, and the people there were not much help.
Joe's book was so entertaining, that I read the entire thing in about an hour! I have since re-read it a couple of times, and decided to re-do those doors and drawers that did not come out well. This time the right way.
He answered all of my most basic questions, like "What is the difference between using a water based or oil based stain?" or "What the heck is a varnish remover, and do I have to use it on my cabinets?" Should I buy paint thinner AND lacquer thinner AND varnish remover, or just one of those 1-step products? Should I buy steel wool or sandpaper? What am I going to do about those doors that have big scratches in them? Etc. etc. etc.

It is pretty thorough. I have had some experience with Photoshop, but I have learned a great deal about this program that I hadn't known before hand with this book. Classic Still Life Painting: A Contemporary Master Shows How to Achieve Old Master Effects Using Today's Art Materials ReviewI've spent a lot of time at book stores paging through books to find one that had actual tutorials for the beginning oil painter. Most were either books that talked about types of brushes, mediums, techniques, etc. without any actual demonstrating, or they were more theory or about composition. While those more advanced ideas are crucial to creating good paintings, as a beginner, I was looking for a book that would get me started actually painting. Something to give me a feel for what the techniques are, and not just describing them.
This book covers everything from the color palette and preparing your surface, to the actual steps the author uses during the painting process. The text is not too wordy, but is in depth enough to give a clear understanding of what you are doing and why.
