Painting Master Landscapes in Oil (Odd Nerdrum Style) ReviewI found this short book to be pretty straightforward in its steps. The most interesting part was that the author/painter uses fine sandpaper to "blur" the background painted strokes to make it more atmospheric. He uses a fan brush almost completely for both paintings. He also uses a trick of blocking in thickly the rocks, then glazing black over that, and wiping the glaze out to create a realistic texture in the foreground. The idea of constantly juxtaposing warm and cool colors in the landscape has helped my own paintings.Painting Master Landscapes in Oil (Odd Nerdrum Style) Overview

How to Draw and Paint Oil & Acrylic: Clouds & Skyscapes: Explore techniques for creating splendid skies ReviewThis book talks about materials, basic techniques and offers tips too. It helps you set up a colour palette for this dramatic subject. It also talks about different cloud formations and observing clouds in the field. In fact three pages of this 32 page book are dedicated to this. Since understanding your subject is of prime importance, Alan then looks at individual types of skies for you to paint. Each painting is presented as a step by step. I liked Clouds at Sunset best as I found the other paintings rather dark. Twilight in the Wilderness is a close second. This book is perhaps not for the complete beginner but the improver, who understands basic techniques and the use of paint and colour and just wants ideas about what to paint. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's yarns and fabrics blog. How to Draw and Paint Oil & Acrylic: Clouds & Skyscapes: Explore techniques for creating splendid skies Overview

Romantic Oil Painting Made Easy ReviewI would highly recommend this book to anyone who is having a little trouble getting started painting. Classes are fine, if you can find a teacher who doesn't just plop a model or still life in front of you and tells you to have at it. Books and videos are helpful (especially the ones by Helen Van Wyk), but most assume some prior knowledge of painting or drawing.
This book breaks down the complex business of oil painting by suggesting a palette which is both manageable and gorgeous. Hagan's palette will save you a lot of money and wasted time. It is not the usual palette suggested by most books; it will give you a huge jump start and prevent a lot of disasters. He also greatly simplifies the matter of brushes. But best of all, he actually explains the SCIENCE of landscape. There is a perfectly logical scientific approach to painting any landscape which will work every time you apply it, in every instance. I am astonished that after years of studying art, I have never seen this explained quite this way before. It works, too. I learned more in my first half hour with this book than I have learned in ages.
Lastly, don't let the "Romantic" word in the title fool you into thinking the author paints like Thomas Kinkade. Even if you don't wish to emulate the author--I certainly don't--his explanations of atmospheric phenomena and good, solid instruction of procedures will facilitate the expression of your own authentic work.Romantic Oil Painting Made Easy Overview

Oil: The Ocean (HT244) ReviewI should have realized this was elementary but tried anyway. It had many many pics of the authors stuff--great. But really not much MEAT about HOW TO. Good as a starting point. I was disappointed that there was not more text as to the techniques though! Cheap enough to not squabble over it; I got a couple pointers out of it!Oil: The Ocean (HT244) Overview

Painting Do-It-Yourself For Dummies ReviewPainting Do-It-Yourself For Dummies by Katharine Kay McMillan, PhD and Patricia Hart McMillan is one of those books that you probably look at and say, "I already know how to paint a wall!." But if you're anything like me (and I hope not for your sake), your skill in doing more than slopping paint around is not all it could be. This book uses the traditional Dummies style to show both the basics and a number of techniques you may never have considered in your decorating plans. My wife and I will be trying some of these out this summer as we gear up for some bigger redecorating chores.
Contents:
Part 1 - Preparing for Your Painting Project: Gathering What You Need; Readying Your Room and Surface; Making Necessary Wall Repairs; Brushing Up on Painting Basics
Part 2 - Painting Walls Like a Pro: Faux Finishes with Shapes and Patterns; Faux Finishes Using Glaze; More Fun Decorative Techniques
Part 3 - Covering Other Areas of Your Home: Coating Ceilings and Floors; Turning Your Brush to Trim, Windows, and Doors
Part 4 - The Part of Tens: Ten Tips for a Practically Perfect Paint Job; Ten Tips for Picking the Best Color
Index
The first part covers all those things about painting that seems to take all the time and are no fun at all... the prep work. Tools are explained, as well as how to properly prepare the surfaces for painting and how to make the necessary repairs involving those gouges and cracks that tend to occur over time. Even though you've done all these things before if you've painted, it's a good refresher on just why it's important and what you gain by doing it correctly. Then it's on to the fun stuff... actually putting paint on the wall! The authors show you, complete with plenty of pictures, how to try some of the things that you usually only see in houses that have decorators on hand. There's horizontal and vertical striping, clouds, color blocking, and tone-on-tone checkerboarding. They are very striking techniques, and obviously would not work in every room in every house. Still, it'll give you ideas you may have never had the courage to contemplate before. Personally, I was most excited about the glaze and texture ideas. If I can talk my wife into it, I'd really like to try the painted tissue wallpaper. Texture for the wall, coverage for the lathe/plaster cracks and irregularities, and something really "different". The part on covering other surfaces is not quite as long or perhaps exciting, but again you'll get the proper technique for doing things so that the results come out looking professional.
This is one of the few books I sat my wife down and went through with her. While we might not agree on actual colors and styles, we at least had a shared perspective that was more than her giving ideas and me saying "whatever". I look forward to actually painting a room or two this year (did I actually write that?), and this book will help me improve the outcome dramatically.Painting Do-It-Yourself For Dummies Overview

Plein Air Painting in Oil (Artist's Library Series) ReviewI am a beginning plein air painter. As a working adult, I don't have time to take a university extension course ot enroll in local art classes. For the time being, I have to make do with instruction from books, and inspiration from published collections, galleries, art shows and museums. I purchased and read a large number of books - in and out of print - on drawing and painting. There is a great deal of fine material out there, but at the very beginning stage I find Frank Serrano's little book to be the most helpful.
Winston Churchill came to recreational painting as an adult, and in his characteristic fashion described, in another very inspiring little book ("Painting as a Pastime," Odhams, London (1965), the essential challenge (facing the blank canvas, brush in hand), and the essential quality the beginner must find within him- or herself: the audacity to put the first daub of paint on the canvas:
"Having bought the colours, an easel, and a canvas, the next step was to begin. But what a step to take! The palette gleamed with beads of colour; fair and white rose the canvas; the empty brush hung poised, heavy with destiny, irresolute in the air. My hand seemed arrested by a silent veto."
There are numerous "how to get started" books in print that deal with oil painting. What makes Serrano's so valuable is it's simple, direct approach to putting the paint on your brush and then on the canvas. It is a quality of this book, and not a failing, that it does not attempt to cover too much material. Serrano sticks to the basics, and describes them with admirable simplicity and directness. His approach is not so simple as to be condescending, though. As a beginning painter, I feel some of the lack of control that I felt when learning to drive. At first there seem to be so many things to think about: mixing the colors to replicate what you see, considering the overall compositional plan of the canvas, keeping in mind the shadows and the highlights. Just one example of a beginner's challenge is to shade the green of the leaves on a tree so that the sunlit leaves are bright and the leaves in shadow are dark, while maintaining the proper character of the green between lit and shadowed areas. The essential value of Serrano's book is that it focuses on the essentials. Any more detail, and the beginner could go into "information overload."
Getting the level of detail is very important in a book aimed at beginners in any discipline. If the student is so burdened with "do's and don'ts" and details that they become confused, or worse, discouraged, the teacher has failed. Yet, there seems to be a tendency for teachers/writers to want to "strut their stuff," to show how well they have mastered the details of the craft. They forget that beginning is not about details, its about fundamentals, and getting those fundamentals right. That's the foundation the beginner needs to progress. Frank Serrano has not forgotten what it's like to be a beginner. Reading his book, I got the impression that Serrano, accomplished as he has become, has not lost the excitement, the sheer joy, of learning. The basics seem as important to him as the more sophisticated elements of the craft. Indeed, looking at his works in the book, on various websites on the Internet, and in person (I own several of his original paintings), a simplicity and clarity of vision becomes apparent. His paintings seem to be as much about the essentials, the basics, of envisioning and experiencing nature as his book is about the essentials of the craft. I've had the pleasure of speaking with Frank on occasion, and I can honestly say the joy and excitement I sense in his paintings are communicated by him on a personal level.
Another aspect of Serrano's book that I believe is important, is that it is informed by his respect for the traditions of the plein air genre. As noted in his book, Frank was influenced by Sam Hyde Harris, who was at the center of plein air activity in Southern California in the mid 20th century. Harris was part of the art community that settled and painted at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains and along the California coast. Harris explored the effects of atmosphere - early morning haze, for example - in his paintings of Pasadena's Arroyo Seco and Los Angeles's Chavez Ravine (long before Dodger Stadium). These and other sites in California and the Western US are the locales in which Frank finds his own subjects.
If you are interested in starting plein air painting, and want a good guide to the essentials without extraneous detail, I don't think you can do better than to buy Frank Serrano's "Plein Air Painting in Oil." You will be learning from a fine artist in the plein air tradition, who has not lost the enthusiasm for learning and the sense of sheer fun that is - or should be - so important to anyone starting out to learn a new craft.Plein Air Painting in Oil (Artist's Library Series) Overview

Oil Painting - The Workshop Experience ReviewI am using this book (along with Kevin Macpherson's "Fill Your Oil Paintings with Light and Color" and Charles Sovek's "Oil Painting -Develop Your Natural Ability") as a foundation for my self-directed study in oil painting.
Goershner's understanding of design and color, and his enthusiasm and clarity of teaching makes him a must-read for serious students of painting. My hope is to become as masterful as he is in his paintings: he manages to intrigue the viewer immediately, and uses superb compositional and color methods to elate and inspire, and leave the viewer wanting more.
Through step by step examples in the book, he explains why his paintings work so well, and how you can develop the same competence. I particularly enjoyed his critiques of 12 student paintings which he then improves and explains why they now look so much better. What a superb way to learn!
I've definitely become a Goershner fan and will be working with this book often.Oil Painting - The Workshop Experience Overview

Oil Painting for the Serious Beginner: Basic Lessons in Becoming a Good Painter ReviewThis is a great little book! It is not a "How-to Guide" in the strictest, pedantic sense. It's an honest book by a serious artist intended for those new to oil painting, just as the title suggests. That's not to say, however, that it would not be useful to more advanced artists.
Those features that the book lacks are among its greatest qualities-there are no "10 Commandments" that are usually found in books of this genre. Most artists approached to write a book of this nature feel obligated to forbid X and insist on Y (with some justification, perhaps) but this book is just a well-considered, sincere, very personal discussion of one person's approach to his art and all the craft that it entails.
Allrich's strength as a writer comes from his balanced, encouraging, honest approach to his topic. Basically, in this book, he says what he does and why he does it. He is never condescending when he discusses the techniques that "many other artists" employ. It's more as if he is inviting his readers to see things his way, if they are so inclined, (and to pick up some of his tricks) or to go the way that the Muse takes them.
I'd strongly recommend this book for art students, would-be writers, people interested in the art and craft of oil painting and, of course, to anyone who wishes to "become a good (or better) painter". I'll re-read this book dozens of times!Oil Painting for the Serious Beginner: Basic Lessons in Becoming a Good Painter Overview

The Oil Painting Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist (Watson-Guptill Materials and Techniques) ReviewOK, so the format of this page only allows you to give one rating, indiscriminating of what kind of readers the book is aiming towards. I'd like more details, as the following:
1) 5-star for self-taught and beginning oil painters.
2) About 3.5 -> 4-star for intermediate oil painters.
3) Nice to own as a reference book for advanced and accomplished. No rating necessary.
So, there you had it. If you are new to oil painting, this book is a nice and PRACTICAL guideline on presently commercially available materials (including oil paints of different brands, oil sticks, oil mediums, solvents, varnishes, supports, brushes, tools, etc.. - you know, "oil materials").
This book is also a good coverage of "basic" oil techniques. These include the process of going from drawing to painting using charcoal, pastel, conte' crayon; as well as "basic" oil painting techniques such as sketching, alla prima, wet-on-wet, etc... Perhaps the most talked-about feature of the book is the chapter about glazing and scumbling. Yep, those "Old Master's techniques". To be fair, this is not the only book that covers the Old Master's techniques. However, it does provide the readers with detailed demonstrations on creating paintings using glazing techniques. In addition, a discussion on presently available TRANSPARENT oil paints (necessary for glazing) is about the most charming thing in the book.
Finally, a chapter about alkyds, oil sticks, and water-miscible oils sums up this book for readers who enjoy alternative media; along with a list of suppliers for practical purposes.
For advanced painters who enjoy more thorough discussions on oil materials and painting techniques, I suggest that they go for a more thorough (and less pictorial) title, such as "The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques" by Ralph Mayer, from which some information in this book is derived.
As for the comments about "poor" drawings and paintings in the book, I hate to admit that there is some truth to them. In my opinion, the author mainly focussed on the technique (rather than presentation) side of the issue. As a result, some of the final paintings look like "child's play". Ironically, readers sometimes see "how great the book is" just by "how great the paintings in the book are".
In terms of "the bottom line", you may "go no wrong" owning this book. If this is the first oil technique book you consider owning, then go for it. For others, it serves well as an additional title to your art library, although some may live just fine without it.The Oil Painting Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist (Watson-Guptill Materials and Techniques) Overview

Classic Still Life Painting: A Contemporary Master Shows How to Achieve Old Master Effects Using Today's Art Materials ReviewI've spent a lot of time at book stores paging through books to find one that had actual tutorials for the beginning oil painter. Most were either books that talked about types of brushes, mediums, techniques, etc. without any actual demonstrating, or they were more theory or about composition. While those more advanced ideas are crucial to creating good paintings, as a beginner, I was looking for a book that would get me started actually painting. Something to give me a feel for what the techniques are, and not just describing them.
This book covers everything from the color palette and preparing your surface, to the actual steps the author uses during the painting process. The text is not too wordy, but is in depth enough to give a clear understanding of what you are doing and why.
If you'd like to learn to paint with layers and glazes, this is a perfect starter book.Classic Still Life Painting: A Contemporary Master Shows How to Achieve Old Master Effects Using Today's Art Materials Overview

Alla Prima: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Direct Painting ReviewI own and make use of over 900 books about art covering all the possible related topics in what is my field of business as a professional artist and part-time art teacher. Needless to say, I buy art books now only on their merits and not by reputation, even when they are written (as this one has been) by an esteemed teacher, Al Gury, Chair of the Painting Department at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Pa. I have bought this one first of all for its clarity of presentation in explaining the direct painting method, and second, its generous use of close-up full color photo documentation of the actual painting process. There are many other reasons too such as the effective use as examples throughout the book of excellent historic and contemporary alla prima art works. Nothing about `Alla Prima' painting is left out or `jumped-over'. This is an important consideration. I find many art books on technique suffer from what I call `skip-over'. How many times have you been following an author/artist's text only to turn the page and see a photo of a nearly completely painted head or figure and the written command under it, "First, establish the form and correct colors." "Well, excuse me! If I knew how to do that would I be reading your "How-to" book?" Too many art books on technique are just excuses for beautiful reproductions or long-winded self-aggrandizements. Mr. Gury's book does have beautiful reproductions but every one of them is there to illustrate informatively, and they do it very well. As for `self-aggrandizement' it is obvious this book is a labor-of-love on behalf of Mr. Gury for his profession as an art teacher, and in grateful acknowledgement of his own teachers, such as Mr. Arthur DeCosta. Therefore, anyone purchusing this is not buying a book so much as they are receiving the keys to a long and worthy tradition in the visual arts. I have found that these keys really do unlock many a subborn door. Take, for example, the close-ups of his working palette in chapter four. Again, most books show the palette set up in the first chapter on `Materials', and then the you're lucky to catch a glimpse of it in the background, if at all, after that. Al Gury's palette is photographed repeatedly in use in each of the four genres demonstrated there. Do not be too quick to look away from these photographs of his working palette for Mr. Gury is providing you therein with a invaluable tool to master color mixing . Did you notice, for instance, that the "pools of color" on his palette, as he calls his spread- out paint mixtures, stay clean in their centers providing `a way back' to the original mixture, and by mixing on the edges of this `home base' rather than creating piles of single, separate hues, these latter colors are all related be they warm or cool, darker or lighter. This enforces a pleasing color harmony without hardly having to think about it!
I am fortunate to currently be a student of Mr. Gury's and have waited for the end of the academic semester to free my review of his book from any worries of favoritism by either of us. I am too serious a student and Mr. Gury too secure in his profession for any thing I say here, positive or negative to have the least consequence in our academic relationship. That observation alone is probably a better review of his worthy book than anything I have written above for you have the man, and his teaching, very much alive in this solidly useful book.Alla Prima: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Direct Painting Overview

The Big Book of Painting Nature in Oil ReviewThis book shows how a painting can capture the essence of a landscape photo without the complexity of every bush tree and rock contained in a photoghaph. There are sections on changing the natural focal point away from animals to a prominent landscape. The sequencing of the development of the painting is easy to follow and little interpretation is required. It's very well presented with a great amount of detail which covers a vast number of settings. Seashore to mountains to forests, plains, and eastern lakes and streams are shown. A great addition to your how to and how to solve library. The Big Book of Painting Nature in Oil Overview

Radiant Oils: Glazing Techniques for Paintings that Glow ReviewHands down, I consider this the best book on explaining glazing techniques. There are not many books out there that are completely devoted to this special technique. This is great for beginners because she explains each step in such clear detail. Everything from color combination, sequence of layering and basic composition is very easy to understand for someone new at this. If you want to learn the basics of Venetian /classical painting, this is the one for you.
My only wish is that portraits would be explored in the book, not just still life.Radiant Oils: Glazing Techniques for Paintings that Glow Overview

Oil Painting Secrets From a Master ReviewOK, so the title of this review got cut off. It should read: "My secrets of how to read 'Oil painting secrets from a master.'"
Anyway, how in the world that a book could get excellent reviews in some comments, yet was claimed to be a disappointment in others? Here is the truth, as I see it.
THIS IS A BOOK ON OIL PAINTING TO OWN; and I say this based on my experience reading a considerable number of art books (see my "About You Area" for your info), as well as my own oil painting experience.
To keep it as short as possible, the following are facts and my opinions.
1) The artist: David A. Leffel is a realist artist, his style will certainly reminds the readers of Rembrandt's, you know, "the Old Master's".
2) To oil painting beginners: This book is NOT meant for beginners. Instead of giving this book a poor review, readers may be better off keeping it for future reference, when their painting skills up to par.
3) To others: This is what are covered in the book in extended bullet point format:
- Artistic thinking: on seeing, the concept
- Painting process: materials, brushstroke techniques, chiaroscuro (light/dark), massing, painting procedures, planes
- Basic advice: light and shadow, values, edges, color, painting still lifes, painting portraits, painting backgrounds
- General observations: comments on painting, attitudes that can hold you back.
For the demos, close-ups (from final painting) are shown to express points in case.
Here are my additional view:
- Mr. Leffel is one of the great names in contemporary American art (read my other reviews should you wonder what other great names may be). His open-minded and humble attitude towards painting and the learning process is very easy to connect, in my opinion, to individuals who love painting for the love of it. These individuals include those who go through painstaking efforts to ever improve their skills.
- This book is very enjoyable and profound. Advice and "secrets" (for those who love "shortcuts", or as I see them, "how an experienced, professional artist would do it - there are NO secrets, THEY ARE JUST GOOD SOLUTIONS THAT FIT YOUR STYLES AND SKILLS) like those in this book are valuable tricks of the trade.
My hat off to the artist (although I rarely wear one), and above all, let's get one thing straight: this book is a FIVE-STAR!

First Steps Painting Oils ReviewI have been painting for a few years, and I love the way this book breaks down the steps of painting. It is helpful to know a little color theory before using this book, but if you are comfortable mixing your colors, you'll be having a good time immediately. DeMore even gives formulas for some of the color mixing she does, which is helpful if you are a beginner. This is a fun and knowledge-filled book. It also helped me to know that Louise DeMore hasn't been an artist since birth. She has a degree in mathematics. This gives me hope that even I can be a good artist, as I embark on my full-blown art career! The book is filled with wonderful advice on how to paint: that you should make mistakes in order to learn, that you should paint faster than you are comfortable with, and that you should have fun. It is absolutely wonderful! I keep reading it and reading it.First Steps Painting Oils Overview
