Next Steps in Altered Photo Artistry: New Ways to Transform Images for Fabric & Quilt Art ReviewBeth's follow on book is in the same style as her Altered Photo Artistry, and thankfully does not duplicate the instructions in the first book. It has the same very clear layout and instructions.
The book shows you how to apply all the various filters and effects in Photoshop Elements to your photos, with clear illustrations of each effect, so you know just how to produce them yourself. Beth also gives approximate ranges for all the adjustables on the filters. You can spend weeks playing with all the variables, and it is good to have a starting point. This section including colour adjustments, is the meat of the book, but it also covers a few options for collage or repeating images which you could then print onto fabric.
The only shortcoming in my opinion is that there is almost no stitching or embellishing detail, apart from a few examples in the gallery with no information.Next Steps in Altered Photo Artistry: New Ways to Transform Images for Fabric & Quilt Art Overview

Adobe Photoshop CS4 Studio Techniques ReviewI've been using photoshop professionally for a few years if you can call it that. Like a lot of people I would mess around with the curves not really knowing what they do to my images. Then I'd adjust the levels and eventually end up with what I thought was a decent edited photo. I like the other books out there for quick tips and recipes but it was clearly this studio techniques book that helped me finally understand what the hec i was doing.
This is not a step by step cookbook type of book but instead its a journey from the basic overview of CS4 to the complex curves, histograms, layers, sharpening and more. Do yourself a favor and get this book if you want to really learn photoshop, not just click the buttons and hope for the best. Congrats Ben and Dan on a terrific book.Adobe Photoshop CS4 Studio Techniques Overview

Photoshop CS4 in Easy Steps: For Windows and Mac ReviewI'm new to photoshop and am taking a college-level course that focuses exclusively on CS4. I have 4 photoshop books and this is far and away the one I use the most. Each photoshop tool is presented in a clear, easy to understand format on a single page. No reading through gobs of unnecessary information here, just the "cheat sheet" style information you need when your trying to learn the program. If your looking for design tricks or how to edit photos, this probably isn't the best book for you. But if you're trying to learn basic commands and how to use them, this is the book to buy.Photoshop CS4 in Easy Steps: For Windows and Mac Overview

Beyond Photoshop: Advanced techniques integrating Photoshop with Illustrator, Poser, Painter, Cinema 4D and ZBrush Review"Beyond Photoshop: Advanced techniques integrating Photoshop with Illustrator, Poser, Painter, Cinema 4D and ZBrush" by Derek Lea is a wonderful book for those who are looking to incorporate Photoshop to their illustrators, 3D work or painting projects.
I recommend this book for those who are past the basics of Adobe Photoshop and those who have dabbled and own the software mentioned below. It's important to note that the author is using CS4 for these projects.
The chapters are:
CHAPTER 1: Sharp Edges and Painterly Blends (Adobe Photoshop CS4 & Illustrator CS4)
CHAPTER 2: 2D Textures and 3D Vectors (Adobe Photoshop CS4 & Illustrator CS4)
CHAPTER 3: Live Trace and Pathfinder Effects (Adobe Photoshop CS4 & Illustrator CS4)
CHAPTER 4: Hand Painted Magic (Adobe Photoshop CS4 & Painter 11)
CHAPTER 5: Create an Old Master (Adobe Photoshop CS4 & Poser 8)
CHAPTER 6: The Best of Both Worlds (Adobe Photoshop CS4 & Cinema 4D 11)
CHAPTER 7: Sculpting Raw Materials (Adobe Photoshop CS4 & ZBrush 3.2)
The first step is to go to the website for the book and download the project files and from there, begin following the instructions laid out in the book. Instructions are very thorough and one of the reasons why this book has only 7 chapters is because it's thorough and Derek Lea does a fantastic job explaining each step.
The good news is that with each step, there is a picture of the artwork and the tool on the software being used, so you can see what is being selected.
If anything, this is a book that works well for those who are at the intermediate level. Beginner level, it all depends on how fast you learn and your familiarity with other software. And this is where the book has its caveat and that is one may own Illustrator but then not own the other software and thus making the other chapters obsolete until you get it.
Even for me, I've purchased and owned only four of the software, so I can only go up to chapter 5. And I assume that many people will be in the same boat.
There are awesome techniques from Derek Lea but it's a book that will be subjective to the user because you need these software to work the project files. Also, it depends on how current your software is. Granted, if you know the software well, you don't need the latest versions and do your own personal workaround.
Overall, "Beyond Photoshop" is a book that is well written and definitely handled quite well by the writer Derek Lea. It would be great to have multiple "Beyond Photoshop" books that focus on Photoshop and one software rather than one book featuring techniques with several software, because it limits the user to the software they own. If you only own Photoshop and Illustrator, you only have three chapters to work with.
This book does favor Photoshop/Illustrator with three chapters and one for the others. So, in a way, I wish there were 3 chapters dedicated to Photoshop + another software each to make the book balanced (if it was well-balanced, this book would receive a 5-star rating) but since it's not, I'm only going to give it three stars. But it's a very good book, it's a well-written book but unfortunately, it's limiting.
It's a solid book but if you intend to buy this, make sure you have the software, so you can utilize each chapter.Beyond Photoshop: Advanced techniques integrating Photoshop with Illustrator, Poser, Painter, Cinema 4D and ZBrush Overview

Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Photographers: The Ultimate Workshop ReviewAdobe Photoshop CS4 for Photographers is a grab-bag of tips, tricks, and techniques for image manipulation, especially compositing. Some chapters that aren't really about Photoshop at all made it in as well, including some surprisingly basic tips on how to shoot sharp photos to good common-sense advice on how to run a photography business, and some slightly bad advice about running a backup system. (No, making copies on DVD's really isn't worth the trouble; a properly-run backup system on magnetic media is more secure, cheaper, and much, much less work.)
This is, in fact, the book's greatest weakness -- it often loses sight of its intended readership. The meat of the book is about compositing techniques, which are of primary interest to professional photographers doing catalog or advertising work, but they will not be very interested in the basic or non-Photoshop related chapters.
The techniques run the gamut from the simple, brilliant, and immediately useful (such as very clever ways of using Extended Photoshop's Stack editing for a variety of image manipulation tasks, or creative uses of Content Aware Scaling), to the incredibly complex (such as creating convincing drop shadows on a textured background in a multiple composite product photo). Advanced masking techniques, hair retouching, and other often difficult compositing-related techniques are also covered.
The upshot is that any individual reader will very likely find about one third of the book useful. The rest will be either not applicable to what s/he does, something s/he already knows, requires proficiences s/he does not (yet) have, or requires Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended, which s/he has not bought.
This book should really have been called "Compositing in Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended." That way, it would have been possible to drop the few chapters that had nothing much to do with compositing, replace some of the rather inane non-Photoshop chapters with an overview of what compositing is, and isn't, good for, with perhaps a note on the ethics of photo manipulation and a short historical overview thrown in, and rearrange the material to form a more coherent and focused whole. As it is, it's not a bad book by any means, and any "green-belt" Photoshop user will likely find something useful in it. With a more coherent vision of its readership and better focus on its core message it could have been much better.Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Photographers: The Ultimate Workshop Overview

Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac: The Missing Manual ReviewAuthor Barbara Brundage is no stranger to anyone who has previously read a book on Photoshop Elements or has visited the Adobe Elements user forum. Thanks to her and the entire concept of the "missing" series for jobs well done. Picking up the book for the first time will have you eager to delve further into both the program and the book as you read different ways to accomplish things and see new features in the software. There are almost always several different approaches to editing methods and all will be explained, yielding perhaps different and more efficient methods for you.
If you are a beginner to Elements you will greatly appreciate this manual for clear explanations and profuse cross referencing. One will be tempted to skip ahead (and often need to go back and study something in more detail.) The thoughtful and frequent cross referencing makes it possible and increases the value and usefulness of the book.
Adobe Bridge CS4 is included in PSE v8 for the Mac and covered extensively enough so that a new user can employ Bridge in its most useful ways. Bridge, we are taught, gives more intricate control of opening RAW files than does Elements itself. In a similar way iPhoto is covered and one can learn the strengths of using Bridge or iPhoto to advantage.
The printed words are dark enough and easy to read--no skimping on ink in this book--but the illustrations are also dark and often rather obscure. While the paper used feels substantial and the book's binding strong, perhaps the paper is not the best for photographs and obliterates some details. More readers may see the need for the missing cd available and explained in the book. The index is useful and seems comprehensive, one of the hallmarks in my opinion of a well done book.Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac: The Missing Manual Overview

Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 Classroom in a Book (Book & CD-ROM) ReviewThis book is an excellent training aid for me. I would prefer to take a class, but wasn't able to get into one at the local community college. Rather than fumble with Elements 7.0 software, I bought the book, set up the lessons on the CD that accompanies it, and began class.
FOR ME and MY learning style this is a perfect method for becoming proficient with Elements 7.0. I purchased 7.0 to replace Elements 3.0 and I am able to use Elements 7.0 far easier than I used Elements 3.0!
Perhaps not as good as a class (for questions and seeing the mistakes of others), with a little dedication and effort I feel quite comfortable with Elements 7.0.Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 Classroom in a Book (Book & CD-ROM) Overview

The Photoshop Elements 7 Book for Digital Photographers ReviewClearly, the authors of this book are experts in Photoshop Elements. This book will teach you tricks and techniques you would probably never be able to learn on your own. In addition they give "cookbook" line by line instructions which even a complete novice can follow.
For the most part, the book is organized in a task-oriented manner which is convenient when you have a specific modification you want to make to your photo, i.e. modify colors, restore old faded photos, merge pictures and a thousand other ways to improve your pictures. The authors obviously know their subject well and are enthusiastic about passing on this information.
The task oriented approach does have some disadvantages though. The book does not have chapters meant simply to explain each button, tool, etc in the program, rather you learn about the tools as you use them for a specific task. This is ok, but makes the book difficult to just sit down and read cover to cover in order to learn how to use the program. Rather it works best when you look up a topic one by one when you have a specific task you want to try. This probably works well for most people, but if you buy the book planning on just reading it from start to finish you may be overwhelmed. It would have been nice to have a chapter or two introducing different tools and concepts.
My biggest complaint is the way they handle the layers tool. The authors state that every other book on elements goes through the basics of using layers, so they are going to skip this. Instead, layers are used frequently to achieve many techniques, with step by step cookbook instructions. Since I have not read a previous book (other than a previous edition of this book which takes the same approach), I don't understand the layers toolbar and just copy their step by step instructions (which give amazing results!). Nevertheless, in my opinion, a chapter explaining layers would help me understand layers better-- then I might be able to perform these tasks by myself rather than just memorizing the steps.
I can't comment on whether this book is a good update if you already own their immediate previous edition as I upgraded from a previous edition for Elements 3. The upgrade is clearly worth it to me as there is substantial new information compared with the version for Elements 3.
In summary, this book has an amazing amount of information presented in a step by step fashion easy to reproduce at home. It will teach you both simple and complex techniques to do amazing things with your pictures. I give it 4 stars because it is short at times on explaining concepts, particularly layers, requiring me to keep the book open and follow each step rather than being able to leave the book behind and apply the concepts I learned. The Photoshop Elements 7 Book for Digital Photographers Overview

Photoshop CS4 Down & Dirty Tricks ReviewI have a couple of Scott's books (and love his style) but my Down & Dirty Tricks book just arrived and it's quickly becoming my favorite. He's just nailed all these cool effects that I've sat there and wondered "How'd they do that?". I'm already playing around with some, and having a ton of fun learning.
I'm about a 5 on a scale of 1-10 in Photoshop and I found the steps very easy to follow. The real beauty is that the book has given me techniques and ideas that I can put to work right now - I didn't have to read the whole book to use it. You can dive in anywhere and learn techniques you can apply to your own projects. I haven't looked at it yet but there's a companion web download page too. Just my opinion, but I think even a more experienced Photoshop user can get a lot out of this book (it's perfect for beginners or intermediate users, so if you think you could teach your own class, maybe review it in the book shop first).
Sometimes I see a look I want to replicate, but it's hard to know where to start, I like how Scott breaks it down. There's even a cool chapter on 3D, which I have been afraid to even play with so far (of course it looks easy when it's step-by-step). These techniques will seriously make me look like a Photoshop guru and that will put money in my pocket (which I really need right now).Photoshop CS4 Down & Dirty Tricks Overview

Adobe Illustrator CS5 on Demand ReviewI took this out from the local library in hopes it would help me get started with Adobe Illustrator CS5. It turns out, it's not that kind of guide. There are a few hands-on workshops at the very end of this book, but this is not really a tutorial and for the most part what you get is just a comprehensive guide to its many features, that identifies and explains its many options. Still, as a guide it is extremely clear, and comes with helpful illustrations and a clear, easy-to-follow layout. So it wouldn't really be useful for the absolute beginner, and was a bit overwhelming for me, but would be an excellent reference guide for someone who is just passing the beginner's stage and ready to learn the program in more detail. Think of it as a missing manual, that's clearer in its coverage than Adobe's online help section.
I know that the "Missing Manual" series already exists, but there's no "missing manual" to Illustrator CS5. This would fill the bill - and I'm half tempted to say I like the format of the "On Demand" guides better than that of the "Missing Manual" series. For each task they give complete coverage in two facing pages, with a step-by-step guide and illustrations. (I actually own a copy of Adobe Photoshop CS5 on Demand, and found that to be extremely helpful - especially given that I have a basic familiarity with Photoshop that I don't have yet with Illustrator.)
Summing up: I wrote this in hopes of being helpful for readers like me who just want to get started with Illustrator. I would suggest trying Adobe Illustrator CS5 Classroom in a Book first - I have that one and also have a couple of others in the series and have found them to be excellent for learning - and then picking this one up as a reference guide.Adobe Illustrator CS5 on Demand Overview

Scott Kelby's 7-Point System for Adobe Photoshop CS3 ReviewThis book may be what you need, or it may actually drive you nuts, quite quickly. This depends on your skill level in photoshop, your personality, and your actual needs regarding photos (i.e., what you need them for). Since some of the reviews formerly posted here sound like something a company marketing team may write, a few clarifications may be in order before you purchase this book.
First, the somewhat misleading title: sure, SEVEN is a nice number with lots of ancient tradition (e.g., from seven deadly sins, and seven virtues to seven habits of highly successful people, etc.) Alas, there aren't just seven "points". It's more like SEVENTY.
Scott Kelby (as always very articulate and mercifully NOT trying to be too humorous this time) uses some very wide, general, and often COMPLEX concepts, and treats them as ONE "point" each. So, for example, one such point (among seven) is "use Adobe Camera RAW to make all appropriate / necessary adjustments" (I am paraphrasing here) - but that is hardly ONE point: it includes setting / adjusting white balance, exposure, white / black point, fussing with shadows, initial sharpening, clarity / vibrance, saturation, etc. Another example of such single "point" (among the seven) would be "painting with light": which sounds good and simple, but actually involves working with multiple adjustment layers, and creating numerous, often quite complex, variable density masks for localized adjustments - so much so, that some images wind up being a sandwich of more than four layers, each with its own masks, individual transparency settings, and blending modes - hardly "one simple point" again.
As a result, fixing many example photos turns out to be a LENGTHY process which often involves more than 20 steps, many of which are in turn complex, multi-step procedures that require both practice and skill (e.g., hand painting precise masks with brushes of progressively diminishing opacity, or using selection drawing tools). Needless to say, such level of precision is best implemented working with a tablet / stylus, and is going to be less-than-pleasant (and successful) using a mouse, a point which needs to be made clearly (and the book doesn't do it). If it is to be done right, it will also be time consuming.
Other issues further add to the above problem: some techniques (such as "faking" water reflections by flipping and blending the actual non-reflected image) will be seen as questionable by many serious photographers. If you ethically don't object to doing this type of "deep-pixel editing", then why not just composit-in a sky or other element taken from another, better-exposed photo altogether? Also, as one reviewer has mentioned previously, some procedures use settings that are arbitrary (7-7-7 for defining a black point when working with curves), and do not include a good explanation of the WHY of the processes involved.
Yet another issue is the fact, that such very heavy reliance on aggressive editing in ACR (especially since Kelby sometimes uses 8-bit jpg files in ACR and not 12-bit RAW) often winds up producing images that are "punchy" (or garish, depending on how you see it), but at the expense of unnatural-looking color shifts, posterization, and artefacts visible EVEN at the very small print sizes used in the book (under 2 inches?) - I encourage you to look at the example of a "before and after" on the p. 31. Would you really want your sunset/sunrise photos to look like that? Perhaps this may be acceptable for saving a one-of-a-kind, 4x6 shot for a family album, but I don't see it having much potential for anything else (e.g., 8x10 or a serious print). Yes, there definitely are many example photos that benefit greatly from the procedures outlined in the book, but that's mostly because many were GOOD (reasonably correctly exposed) photos to start with, and simply needed help to get rid of the characteristic "dull" / "flat" look so typical of baseline RAW files. Most also rely of Kelby's experience and intuition in deciding which steps (of the seven) to implement and which to skip in each case.
There is also a more serious, practical issue here: if you are going to spend several HOURS fixing one, not-very-good-quality photo, and repeat that lengthy (and eventually repetitive and boring) process with some frequency, wouldn't you be better off just spending A FEW hours ONCE to take a workshop with a good photographer, so that your BETTER photos do not need such convoluted and extensive "fixing" in post all the time?
To summarize: the book outlines some useful, if excessively complex techniques to fix (smaller) photos. Many of these techniques will not be feasible on photos meant for larger print sizes, unless a stylus, considerable time, patience for trial-and--error, and precision masking skills are used. For remedying of casual snapshots for a family album, many techniques presented here, although potentially useful, will be an overkill for most users. For professional users and serious advanced CS3 photo-amateurs, this book is too formulaic to be useful.
On the plus side, the book is well written, carefully edited, and has a generous amount of well-described screen shots and (small) "before-and-after" photos.Scott Kelby's 7-Point System for Adobe Photoshop CS3 Overview

Photoshop Elements 7 For Dummies ReviewUnlike other Dummies books I have (Windows XP and Vista for Dummies), this is more like the manual that should have come with Adobe Photoshop Elements 7. It's not for people that have never used a photographic program before. It assumes you have some knowledge of digital enhancements. That being said, it's a very good manual and it's in color. It's a good desk reference. It's not meant to be read from cover to cover. After reading the first few chapters, you can use as a reference to get you over the hurtles you don't understand, give you some common sense tips, enlighten you on some things you probably didn't know, and give you some helpful short-cuts. All-in-all, a very useful manual to have, and the DVD is great to get you started even before you start and reading. Two thumbs up from me.Photoshop Elements 7 For Dummies Overview

Photoshop CS5 for Nature Photographers: A Workshop in a Book ReviewPhotoshop CS5 For Nature Photographers - A Workshop in a Book: Ellen and Josh Anon are back with a new edition of the acclaimed Photoshop for Nature Photographers book. The new version replaces the accompanying DVD with a web site that includes the content to practice the techniques. I find this much more convenient than a DVD accompaniment. I find the new book to be a significant improvement from the already excellent older books. Not only do they cover all of the new functions in Photoshop of interest to Nature Photographers, they have also enhanced some of the older sections and have beefed up the sections for Photoshop Elements users. Photoshop CS5 no longer ships with a tutorial on the new functions as it did with previous versions, so a book like this is even more essential than before and it becomes the defacto User Manual for me when I want to look up a function that maybe I haven't used in a while, learn more about new functionality such as HDR Pro, or just brush up as I often like to do.
As with previous versions, the book follows a photo workflow by teaching you the basics of digital capture first, followed by Bridge, the first place you interact with images on your computer; then on to Adobe Camera Raw, followed by Photoshop in depth. Detailed setup instructions for the many different Preference sections in the different modules that make up Photoshop CS5 are included. Unfortunately this book was published before ACR 6.1 was released which includes lens profiles. However the book does cover the Lens Correction filter which utilizes identical technology so you can just apply your learning from that section of the book to the new ACR 6.1. The in depth Photoshop sections take you step by step through almost anything you would ever want to do. I found the section on the new Refine Edge command extremely useful since this is a very powerful new function but it is a case of a single equation in many unknowns. The Anon's guide the reader through how to best use this tool to make truly excellent selections previously not possible in older versions of Photoshop. I felt the discussion on the new Content Aware Fill to very balanced. Many things I have read make it sound almost like a panacea which, in my own experience, it is not. Ellen and Josh clearly indicate it's shortcomings and the additional work required after using the tool to make your selection perfect. I also found the section on HDR Pro extremely useful and following the steps will even allow the HDR novice, to produce some very nice HDR images. Beyond the normal adjustments one makes to images, the book also tackles the more complex subjects such as Composites, creative Black and White, Filters, Multiple Exposures, and an enjoyable section on painterly mages that gave me some new ideas to try. Photoshop CS5 for Nature Photographers concludes with a chapter on how to get the best output and a Tie Savers chapter which tackles some major time saver functions.
Throughout, the book, many of the images have been upgraded including many stunning new photos taken by the authors themselves. Additionally short technique articles from notable photographers including George Lepp, Joe McDonald, Arthur Morris, John Shaw and more are included.
My only complaint is that the index of the book is not as effective as it could be. As an example, I wanted to find HDR Pro when I first got the book. The index does not have an entry for this but does have one for HDR imaging. It takes you to a single page, in the middle of a very complete multi page section on HDR Pro. It doesn't even take you to the first page of that section. I found on several occasions where the index got me close but missed by a little bit. The eBook version would not have this problem since most eReaders offer content aware search.
List price or Photoshop CS5 for Nature Photographers is $49.99 however the paper version can be had at Amazon and Barnes and Noble for $30 to $35 and the eBook version is below $30. For that, you get nearly 500 pages of jam packed with easy to understand and easy to apply information about CS5. The eBook version is already available through the Kindle store at Amazon but is not available on iBooks. I downloaded the free sample which includes all of the preliminaries and the first chapter using the Kindle App on my iPad. The formatting of some of the pages is strange when viewing in horizontal mode but it all clears up in vertical mode. This book would definitely be better in iBooks or the Barnes and Noble reader on the iPad than it is using the Kindle reader as both of those are better designed for the iPad.
One always wonders if a new version of a book that one already owns is worth the money. This book provides, in one place, all of the information to use the new tools in Photoshop CS5 as well as providing an excellent manual for all of the other functions that a Nature Photographer is likely to use. In addition to covering the new areas that were introduced into Photoshop with the release of CS5, many of the functions that were new to CS4 are now covered more thoroughly. In this case, I must conclude that it is worth purchasing the new version of Photoshop for Nature Photographers as it is a much more complete reference than it has ever been in the past.Photoshop CS5 for Nature Photographers: A Workshop in a Book Overview

Photoshop CS4 Visual QuickStart Guide ReviewI bought this book for a class that I am taking and it is very well written and in full colour, which may or may not be important; to me, it is. It is pretty thorough. I have had some experience with Photoshop, but I have learned a great deal about this program that I hadn't known before hand with this book. I am waiting for the Illustrator CS4 book to be released.Photoshop CS4 Visual QuickStart Guide Overview
