Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 Classroom in a Book ReviewI had no prior experience with Photoshop Elements or Photoshop and went through the exercises in the book from the beginning to the end. I thought they did a decent job of demonstrating the features of the software that they did use, but there are still a lot of features that were not explored. The examples worked flawlessly, except when I made mistakes or did not pay attention. Couple this book with one that targets specific tasks, such as the Photoshop Elements 5 book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby and I think you have 75% of the program covered, the rest can be learned through experimentation. My only suggestion would be to include a feature tree that shows all of the available commands.Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 Classroom in a Book Overview

Teach Yourself VISUALLY Photoshop Elements 6 (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech)) ReviewI have been using this book for the last week or so. I've paged through the entire book and read about half of it.
Pros: 1. The book is very easy to read - no complicated jargon I don't understand. 2. There are lots of pictures/sample photos, for us visual learners. 3. The step-by-step instructions are fabulous! Even a total computer idoit like myself can follow these instructions. 4. The chapters are well organized. It's easy for me to find what I need. I keep this right by my computer and refer to it constantly.
Cons: 1. I can find no mention of how to use the "Face/Head Swapping" tool. For me, with small children in the home, that was a big selling point to Elements 6 (we can never seem to get a photo were everyone is smiling). I figured it out on my own, but I find it odd there is no mention of it in the book... or maybe I just missed it, but I've looked several times. 2. Right now, I am trying to create a PhotoBook and it's driving me crazy! There are little to no instructions on the program and the book only has a small blurb about PhotoBooks that is NOT helpful. I also had trouble trying to figure out how to create collage/scrapbook pages... maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it seems like it shouldn't be this hard. Photoshop CS3 Restoration and Retouching Bible ReviewDon't be fooled by the "Restoration and Retouching Bible" title because this book offers substantially more for anyone wishing to develop a firm understanding of the post capture phase of digital photography. Starting with a comprehensive examination over all aspects of the digital image (for instance, the value of histograms), as well as how vital a file management system is; the author knows the importance of laying this foundation of knowledge before proceeding with Photoshop and retouching skills.
You are fully a third into the book before retouching and restoration is covered and Mr. Fitzgerald does not leave anything out, covering all aspects of working with old damaged photos or problem complexion; there is even a section on architecture. The big plus for this book are the sample images that can be downloaded from a web site to follow along with the work flow examples in the training, so that at each stage the reader can compare their results.
Training books are tough to write and keep engaging, but the author's tone and language shows both a strong understanding and deep commitment to the photographic image. He also does not favor Mac world; respecting the growing percentage of Photoshop users on Windows as well. This book will be an important resource for many photographers regardless of their specialty or level of expertise.Photoshop CS3 Restoration and Retouching Bible Overview

Adobe Photoshop CS4 Studio Techniques ReviewI've been using photoshop professionally for a few years if you can call it that. Like a lot of people I would mess around with the curves not really knowing what they do to my images. Then I'd adjust the levels and eventually end up with what I thought was a decent edited photo. I like the other books out there for quick tips and recipes but it was clearly this studio techniques book that helped me finally understand what the hec i was doing.
This is not a step by step cookbook type of book but instead its a journey from the basic overview of CS4 to the complex curves, histograms, layers, sharpening and more. Do yourself a favor and get this book if you want to really learn photoshop, not just click the buttons and hope for the best. Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 for Photographers ReviewI've been using Photoshop Elements 9: The Missing Manual and How to Cheat in Photoshop Elements 9 as guides to learning PE9. I purchased this book to complete my Elements library, lured by the appeal to photographers in its title. I've found this book to have some severe short comings compared to the other two books I'm using. Just one example: Dodging and burning are classic techniques used by the darkroom photographer. Elements has digital tools specifically designed for these processes. The only reference to these tools in Elements for Photographers is an indication that they exist in the tool bar. There is no description of how to use them; instead the book describes a very clumsy method for dodging and burning. The Missing Manual devotes three pages to these techniques and tools. The layout of this book is attractive and the workflow suggestions for accomplishing certain tasks are helpful. Overall though there seems to be too much space devoted to topics that could be covered in a few pages [forty-one pages set aside for info regarding sharing pictures on-line and the like?] and not enough space devoted to really mastering the tools in the program. Finally, finding text that read Elements 8 when the it should have read Elements 9 [a case of sloppy editing at best] did not inspire confidence. Overall, this book can't compete with the other PE9 guides I'm using.Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 for Photographers Overview

Photoshop 7 Bible, Professional Edition ReviewAfter dabbling in Photoshop for a while the thing that has become most clear to me is that it isn't an easy program to learn, and no doubt it isn't an easy one to explain either. So I won't blame Deke McClelland for not turning me into a Photoshop genius overnight (which he didn't) - but even if that is too much to expect of any book, this one is a mixed bag in more ways than that. On the plus side, it certainly is comprehensive. Just about every option available in Photoshop is explained - and that is the major downside at the same time. This book is very much written from the viewpoint of the program, not that of the user. If you want to know how to achieve a particular effect, you will just have to browse the 1000+ pages hoping you will stumble on the right tools. Reversely, you may read many an explanation of a tool without ever getting into the clear why you would want to use it. For instance, the chapters on selections, paths and masks made it abundantly clear to me that there are some 5,000 or so ways of selecting part of an image in Photoshop, but I remained in the dark as to which ones are useful under which circumstances. Much of the text on paths and masks actually seemed highly esoteric to me. I can understand that it is impossible to illustrate each and every option visually, but unfortunately the illustrative examples that are given often don't seem to be very compelling (e.g., the possible use of stroking a path is demonstrated by the creation of a tapering line underneath an image of a planet, an effect that could just as easily have been achieved with a simple paint brush.) In fact (and ironically), the graphics are one of the major weaknesses of the book (just take a peek at the hideous cover!). I found them mostly unimaginative, and often too small and badly printed to show up the differences between several effects they were supposed to demonstrate.
The accessibility of the book is not helped by the fact that after introducing a function, the author stops naming it and reverts to a mere mention of the keyboard shortcut - so when you're new to this, soon enough you no longer know what he is doing (also, I would urge the publisher to please create separate Windows and Mac editions of this book: the ubiquitous additions of the Mac alternative to Windows shortcuts is highly irritating!).
The order of chapters/subjects doesn't seem to be guided by any pedagogical considerations. Layers are not discussed until page 633, even though (as everyone who has ever tried Photoshop or any similar program knows) you really can't do anything at all without an understanding of this function. The style of writing is informal and chatty, and by page 500 or thereabouts the author's facetiousness started to wear thin on me. Maybe after I have gained more experience with Photoshop I will come to appreciate more of McClelland's suggestions. However, as a novice, plowing through this book yielded to me no more than 8 or 9 new insights that I found directly useful.Photoshop 7 Bible, Professional Edition Overview

George DeWolfe's Digital Photography Fine Print Workshop ReviewMy grandmother was a great baker. But everything she did in creating a pie or cake came from memory or intuition. When my mother tried to create written recipes of my grandmother's procedures, she was frustrated by quantities like a handful of something or enough of something. My mother really lost it when my grandmother told her to roll out some dough until it looked right. If you can't deal with this kind of instruction, George DeWolfe may not be for you.
The book covers De Wolfe's recommendations for making a great digital print. I'd be overstating things if I said he never gives firm instructions but de Wolfe is more concerned with the feeling of a print than with specific rules. He says that there are six elements to control in making a print: cropping, contrast, brightness, color, defects and sharpness. He then proceeds to explain his workflow to deal with each of these issues, both globally and at a detail level.
This book is aimed at advanced users of Photoshop. Quite often the instructions that he gives to create a desired effect contain only the most significant steps in the process, leaving it for the reader to fill in the gaps. Occasionally he says that he is telling you all you need to know to use a particular Photoshop tool. For example he says that all you need to know to use the curves tool is that moving the curve upwards increases brightness and moving it downwards decreases brightness. That's hyperbole because there are other important functions of the curve tool that make it easier or more effective to apply.
DeWolfe sometimes favors some rather idiosyncratic tools to process images. Photoshop usually offers several approaches to accomplishing a task, but DeWolfe often selects the more unusual. For example DeWolfe prefers the use of the history brush to masks to effect adjustments to the image. He also suggests several procedures that other experts find problematic. For example, he says that, as a result of the nature of digital photography, detail sharpening is important early in the process as opposed to edge sharpening at the end of the process. Some other experts are less accepting of this approach.
I expected that a book called a workshop would require some participation by the reader beyond just reading. This might be tutorials or at least sample images to follow along with the text. Particularly when the author suggested some procedure that was counter-intuitive for me, it would have been nice if there had been an image to work from, either from a CD or downloaded from the internet.
DeWolfe regularly suggests that a Photoshop plug-in that he authored is the solution to a problem. I always wonder how impartial an author is when he suggests that you buy a product that he sells.
If you are just getting comfortable with Photoshop but want to move into more advanced techniques, I suggest starting with Rob Sheppard's "Outdoor Photographer Landscape and Nature Photography with Photoshop CS2". Its lessons are applicable to as many genres as DeWolfe's. On the other hand, if you are an experienced user and able to fill in the blanks when DeWolfe is skipping along, and if you are comfortable enough with Photoshop to decide whether you want to accept DeWolfe's techniques, this book will help you to examine your notions, get a better handle on a logical workflow and perhaps even learn procedures that are more useful to you then those you presently know.George DeWolfe's Digital Photography Fine Print Workshop Overview

Photoshop CS4 Workflow: The Digital Photographer's Guide ReviewPhotoshop CS4 Workflow: The Digital Photographer's Guide is one of the best Photoshop primers I've read. The author works through image adjustments in a very logical progression. He begins with very simple edits and works his way up to more complex fine-tuning. The instructions are both step-by-step and very clear. He also does an excellent job of explaining the "big picture" of why you want to make these adjustments and does not just turn you into a mouse clicker following steps by rote.
While no one book is going to tell you everything you could ever want to know about Photoshop, this is a fairly comprehensive tome. The entire workflow process is covered beginning with downloading files and sorting them in Bridge, all the way through printing. I would suggest using the "Look Inside" function to check the Table of Contents if you're interested in a complete list of the specific steps covered. The good news is that all the most common bases are covered, and covered well. If I could add one thing to this book, it would be a chapter or two on the basics of making adjustments in the LAB color space. For certain images, LAB will yield truly superior results, yet it receives no coverage in most Photoshop books. If you're interested in learning more, I highly recommend Photoshop LAB Color: The Canyon Conundrum and Other Adventures in the Most Powerful Colorspace (though that book was written for CS2 and could now use an update).
For those who own the CS3 edition of this book, you should be aware that this edition offers a lot of the same material. Yes, there are additions, but you will want to flip through it in the bookstore before buying to make sure that there is enough new content here to warrant the purchase.
If this book has a weakness, it is that it doesn't really live up to its title. The book is not about workflow per se, but about all the steps that are part of a workflow. Only the first and the last chapters really focus on the aspect of trying to plan the workflow itself. This is no crime, I don't know if it's even possible to fill an entire book with workflow planning discussions without becoming ridiculously redundant and useless. But Tim Grey and his publishers chose to identify this as a workflow text and on that basis I think they have failed. Still, it's an excellent guide to editing photos and I recommend it to anyone looking to improve their skills in that area.Photoshop CS4 Workflow: The Digital Photographer's Guide Overview

The Photoshop CS2 Book for Digital Photographers ReviewIn my recent effort to educate myself in matters of Photoshop CS2 I read in detail three books - Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers by Martin Evening, Photoshop CS2 by Fraser & Blatner, and The Photoshop CS2 book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby. Of the three, I would rank the Evening and the Fraser & Blatner books as comprehensive books that, if the reader would fully understand all that was discussed, they would be considered a Photoshop Pro. The Kelby book I considered to be quite basic in that it covered only some of the principal topics and did so in an elementary fashion (it would take Kelby four pages with all his illustrations and stepwise instructions to cover what the other books might cover in one). I would recommend the Kelby book for a hobbyist that doesn't want to devote a lot of learning time and who wishes only a basic knowledge of Photoshop CS2 in order to occasionally turn out a nice image. I would recommend either of the other two books if one wants a mastery of what CS2 can really do. But, be warned that the subject is complex and will take a lot of time to learn. Of the two, Evening's book has the advantage in that it is a little less expensive, he includes a disk containing the images used in many of his tutorials so the reader can follow along with the same exercises, and because he is a fashion photographer many of his images are fashion shots of pretty women. The Fraser & Blatner book has the advantage of being somewhat larger and more complete and goes into deeper detail on some aspects of CS2. Both of these books have a high orientation to producing images for commercial press publication. I would recommend that if one wants to really learn CS2 they read both books, even though the same topics are covered in both, the subject is sufficiently complex it pays to learn it twice from perhaps somewhat different angles. The Photoshop CS2 Book for Digital Photographers Overview

The Creative Digital Darkroom ReviewIf you've bought a Katrin Eismann book before, you're no doubt looking at this one, too, since her books are so good. And what you've come to expect from her is indeed here - clear, concise information and step by step tutorials with plenty of diagrams showing what's being done. In its layout it's very similar to her Restoration and Retouching books, but denser, with a smaller font and more information, while remaining clear and balanced with a solid presentation. There's very few pages of wasted space.
As the title implies, the theme of the book is using traditional darkroom techniques in the digital world. In fact, part of the audience it's aimed at are experienced photographers who'd like to move to digital and carry over the skills they've learned. Focusing on this theme, the authors give us tools in global and local enhancements of tone and color, as well as sharpening/blurring and removing distractions, to bring out a photo's full potential.
It's all good and thorough, but be aware that in choosing to focus on that, the authors don't touch on many of the tools that are essential parts of Photoshop, including Photomerge, Liquify, Text, and Actions. It also doesn't cover Bridge or printing in depth, but there's actually a chapter on printing available as a PDF at the book's website: creativedigitaldarkroom.com.
It does cover Levels and Curves in more depth than any other book I've seen. It also covers Layer Masks, Shadow/Highlight, Perspective, Blending Modes, Lens Correction, Camera RAW (including the new Clarity tool), Split Toning, Sepia Toning (including Greg Gorman's technique), HDR, LAB, edge effects (using the Filter Gallery), Cross-Processing, and Sharpening, as well as including sections on creating a faded b/w photo and the like.
That said, I do have a few issues with the book. While the landscapes are like those you'd take yourself, many of the photos are a bit too abstract and arty for my tastes. Duggan uses Holgas, pinhole cameras, and a Lensbaby that blurs all the edges, and if you're not into such creative uses of cameras, these can get old once you've seen a few. Also, many are of moody old storefronts and gravestones, which adds a somber tone to the book.
Also, for those interested in working on portraits, there's very few of them here, and nothing about creating dynamic b/w portraits. The five or so portraits are used simply to demonstrate vignetting, sharpening, and the use of a warming filter.
Those points aside, this book delivers. Even when introducing the fundamentals of such tools as Levels and Curves, it goes right into detailed examples of how to use each. Some books merely list what each tool does, simply from lack of room, but by focusing on the essential tools, here you get exactly what you need - a brief overview containing all the important points followed by how you can best use them in your work.
Is a lot of it review? The majority of the tools outlined - the ones you use every day - are indeed covered much as they are in Eismann's Restoration and Retouching. The main difference is that Restoration covers mostly portraits, while this one focuses on landscapes and still lifes. Also, Restoration only covers up to CS2, while this one outlines all the latest tools in CS3, including a good deal on the very useful Black and White filter, as well as the new RAW 4.1 converter. It also gives a good overview of Lightroom, which I wasn't familiar with, but now has me looking that way.
If you already have Real World CS3 or a similar book, you already know more than most about Photoshop's technical aspects, and so you surely don't need a review. Still, this book's two chapters on setting up your Preferences, the different color spaces, and batch renaming are only fifty pages, so there's really not much to skip. And if you don't have Real World CS3, this book actually does cover all the basics you need in setting up your computer and workspace.
By the way, if you don't have CS3, most of the techniques here can be used with CS2 and CS. You won't have the use of the Highlight, Recovery, Clarity, B/W, and Curves tools in Camera RAW, and you won't have the B/W Filter with built-in settings like Infrared, but the authors do tell you how you can use the Channel Mixer, and Levels and Curves work much the same.
To sum up, you'll be pleased with this book if you don't go into it with any expectations that it be anything else. When I first saw it listed, I thought it'd build on where Restoration left off, going deep into creative interpretative techniques now that you have your photos optimized. Such techniques are indeed in the later part of the book, such as in using scanned paper for adding texture, but on the whole this book shows how to use the tools you're used to to get the most out of each photo's tone, color, and dramatic impact. In short, it's for experienced darkroom photographers as well as beginner and intermediate Photoshop users, instead of those who are already advanced in using Photoshop.
If you're a total beginner taking snapshots and are looking for a good overall coverage of all Photoshop has to offer, you might try Deke McClelland's Photoshop CS3 One-On-One or Martin Evening's Photoshop CS3 for Photographers. They're not as thorough as this book in each tool, but they cover more ground, give you a good tour, and set you up fine. From there, if you find your work focusing on family snapshots, portraits, and restoring old photos, go with Eismann's Restoration and Retouching, which covers a great deal more on repairing photos, such as using the floating Healing Patch and Pattern Maker. (You can download a full chapter from her digitalretouch.org site.) And if your interests lead you to fine art or landscape photography, this would be the book to learn from next.
Finally, if you already are a fine art or landscape photographer either new to Photoshop or without a solid grounding in the best use of all the fundamentals, or simply wish to brush up on your skills, this one is made for you.The Creative Digital Darkroom Overview

Photoshop Elements 8 Digital Classroom, (Book and Video Training) ReviewIf you are a novice photographer/designer and feel that regular Photoshop is too much for what you need it for, Photoshop Elements 8 and the Digital Classroom book are the perfect choice. This book clearly explains how to make your pictures look the best they can and everything is easy to follow. I really enjoyed the several chapters pertaining to adjusting color and exposure. This is perfect for those "great" shots you take that don't come out quite the way you expected. I also like the fact that with Elements 8 you can actually blend photos together using the Layers feature. This is a very handy book and program for those who want to get a little more out of their photos, without feeling like they need to have a professional photography studio software to accomplish it. Adobe Photoshop 7.0 for Photographers, First Edition ReviewA simply superb book for learning how to use Photoshop 7.0 with images from your digital camera or scanner. I've been using Photoshop since before Adobe purchased it from the Knoll brothers and would assert that this book ranks among the two or three best works ever published on Photoshop, even when compared with Adobe's own excellent Classroom-in-a-Book series.
The book is designed to address the issues that pro photographers face in reproducing and manipulating digital imagery with Photoshop 7.0, but contains a wealth of info and shortcuts that are valuable to anyone using Photoshop with the current generation of digital cameras and scanners. The author also is to be commended for the clarity of his writing, and his ability to explain the more complex concepts of digital manipulation of imagery.
I especially like the inclusion of examples generated by pro photographers using professional models, instead of the poorly lit examples that fill most books covering the use of Photoshop. The CD tutorials included with the book are excellent, as well. The information on color space and calibration in the book can be a bit daunting for new users, but they are well worth the effort to read. The example projects included in the book are very useful and cover nearly all the practical situations that most photographers might face in their work with Photoshop.
The actual book is beautifully printed on fine quality paper and the example photos are reproduced quite nicely by the folks at Focal Press. I would love a bit more on using third-party plug-ins in the next edition, but that is a minor criticism of this wonderful volume. This book represents the current state-of-the-art for improving your work with Adobe's flagship application.
While most certainly geared towards pros, the book is great for those users who aspire to those heights. Even though I've worked with digital imagery for almost twenty years, I still learned an amazing amount from this book, and consider it to be a bargain. Very highly recommended.Adobe Photoshop 7.0 for Photographers, First Edition Overview

Sams Teach Yourself Adobe Photoshop CS4 in 24 Hours (5th Edition) ReviewThis is a great book to help any Photoshop user get a good understanding of what the program is capable of. I've been using Photoshop for a couple years now, but never really learned how to use all the tools. Now I feel much more capable of editing my pictures efficiently.
The book is organized wonderfully for helping a beginner warm up to the program, but still covers important topics (like masks and blending modes) that are important for seasoned users to have an understanding of. If used the way it was intended (read from start to finish, like a course textbook), any new Photoshop user will finish with useful experience with all the tools that will help them produce amazing results.
That said, this book covers only the features that are included in the Standard Edition of Photoshop. Some Extended Edition tools are mentioned, but are only introduced - not explained. Still, the Standard Edition tools are the ones used in most Photoshop settings that do not deal with video and 3D graphics. For anyone looking to use Photoshop as a photo-editing tool, this book covers all the information you need.
As far as content depth, it is impossible for a book to teach all the ways that the many tools can be used together. There are many examples and exercises for the reader to work on, but there is no way for every variation to be covered. As with any creative skill, more practice is always encouraged to give a working understanding of the many effects that are possible.Sams Teach Yourself Adobe Photoshop CS4 in 24 Hours (5th Edition) Overview

Photoshop CS4 in Easy Steps: For Windows and Mac ReviewI'm new to photoshop and am taking a college-level course that focuses exclusively on CS4. I have 4 photoshop books and this is far and away the one I use the most. Each photoshop tool is presented in a clear, easy to understand format on a single page. No reading through gobs of unnecessary information here, just the "cheat sheet" style information you need when your trying to learn the program. If your looking for design tricks or how to edit photos, this probably isn't the best book for you. But if you're trying to learn basic commands and how to use them, this is the book to buy.Photoshop CS4 in Easy Steps: For Windows and Mac Overview

Adobe Photoshop for Underwater Photographers ReviewThis book is really the third book in a series by the photographer - writer team of Jack and Sue Drafahl. First is Digital Imaging for the Underwater Photographer. Second is Master Guide for Underwater Digital Photography. All three published by Amherst Media.
The reason for this book is that underwater photography, under the best of circumstances (and how often do you find those) the filtering and color changing effects of water tend to produce images that are simply not what we want to see in a photograph. Colors tend to get washed out, after all, the fish doesn't want to stand out too much. Fish that stand out tend to become dinner for somne other fish. But in looking at the picture, we want to see the fish. Photoshop is the answer.
This book is not a tutorial on how to get started with Photoshop. It presumes a certain base knowledge so that it can spend its time on the particular needs, problems and solutions for the problems facing people editing underwater photographs. At that task, this book is beautifully done.Adobe Photoshop for Underwater Photographers Overview

The Photoshop Elements 6 Book for Digital Photographers ReviewLove this book. It has the answers to most of the problems you have with digital photography that you want to fix. Things like something else being in the picture that isn't supposed to be there and taking away flaws in the skin. It gives you the simple way to do these things. I've only had it for 2 days and I've already learned a couple of things I'll use over and over. It even tells you the setting that you need to use as defaults on Elements. The other book I bought with this one "Photoshop Elements 6 the missing manual" is good also but it's so huge. This one goes into more detail on do this and do that. Love it!The Photoshop Elements 6 Book for Digital Photographers Overview
