Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Photoshop Workflow Bible ReviewI'm a professional portrait photographer. I work both in-studio as well as on-location and I have used Photoshop intensively for 6 years and Lightroom since beta. That said, I am always open to learning new methods that can shave time off my workflow - the less time I spend at the computer, the more dollars per hour I make. This book has helped me to learn more about the programs that I use all day every day.
Now, trying to cover ALL of Lightroom and Photoshop in one (albeit full-to-the-brim) book is an impossible task. One has to choose what to cover in depth, and what to leave out. Fitzgerald has done a fantastic job of covering the critical components of the actual workflow without getting bogged down in (for instance) the minutiae of how to do eye enhancement retouching so as to bring out liquidity and presence.
All of us need to `hammer through' thousands of images, sorting, color-balancing, retouching a bit, cropping, etc.,, etc., etc., ad infinitum! And, all of us need to do this faster and smarter without dropping our guard on the finest end result we can create (which is what our clients pay for!) Fitzgerald gives you just the right amount of information so you can get up and running RIGHT NOW and start using the programs.
This book is a huge help in that. Fitzgerald covers the entire process from importing images to Lightroom through final printing out of Photoshop. As a portrait artist who specializes in enhancement retouching I have spent hundreds of hours studying and using Photoshop and Fitzgerald teaches me new stuff on darn near every page. I also simply love Lightroom (especially 2.1!) and Fitzgerald gives so many great little tips along the way I wonder how the heck he could find time to learn it all and write the book when LR2.0 was still in beta!
Caveat: this in NOT an absolutely thorough coverage of every little thing in either of the programs (for instance, color management gets a few pages here and there whereas Bruce Fraser wrote a whole book on it!), but, that said, it sure as heck will give you the groundwork that you require for getting your workflow up and running and for understanding the programs enough to really get good work done. Actually, I am very surprised at how well Fitzgerald did considering the scope of this book.
I wish the index was more thorough, but I wish that for every book (oh! for an on-line concordance for books!) And I wish there were full-tilt keyboard shortcut charts for both programs (but those can be found on-line, I suppose). The layout is a bit dense to my eye, but there is so much to cram in, I guess if it were less dense the book would be a brick.
Lastly, I have to say that I usually find that book writers do a poor job of keeping a teaching-flow going while writing, they jump around, they try and be too `cool' and get all cutesy, or they dive down long, dark rabbit holes and lose the reader. Fitzgerald is one of the best in-print teachers I have come across, and I read many books per month.
All in all: if you want to improve your bottom line by improving your workflow, buy it!Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Photoshop Workflow Bible Overview

The Photoshop Elements 6 Book for Digital Photographers ReviewLove this book. It has the answers to most of the problems you have with digital photography that you want to fix. Things like something else being in the picture that isn't supposed to be there and taking away flaws in the skin. It gives you the simple way to do these things. I've only had it for 2 days and I've already learned a couple of things I'll use over and over. It even tells you the setting that you need to use as defaults on Elements. The other book I bought with this one "Photoshop Elements 6 the missing manual" is good also but it's so huge. This one goes into more detail on do this and do that. Love it!The Photoshop Elements 6 Book for Digital Photographers Overview

Digital Art Masters: Volume 5 ReviewDigital Art Masters: Volume 5 is another great compilation of top quality art and insightful tutorials. If you have earlier volumes, you pretty much expected that. I've a wonderful time going through this thick 288-page book.
This time, art is categorised into 5 sections: Sci-Fi, Scene, Fantasy, Character and Cartoon. As usual, you see work created from all sorts of medium (2D & 3D), across a variety of art genre gravitating towards concept art. There are 3D modeling on different subjects, digital and background painting and many more.
The featured illustrations and galleries are beautiful and detailed. I can't begin to imagine the amount of time spent to create some of these inspiring illustrations, especially so when some of them are just personal projects.
There's plenty to learn from as there are to see. The artists share their techniques as they go through their process of creating the featured illustrations. The book is filled with all sorts of tips, ranging from matte painting, scene composition to even portrait drawing.
You can also visit the publisher's website for some free video tutorials.
Volume 5 is a great addition. Highly recommended to 3D modelers, digital painting artists and art lovers.

Adobe Photoshop CS3: Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks (Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks) ReviewAdobe Photoshop has had a long and well-deserved reign at the top of the heap of digital image editors. The broad-ranging capability of this behemoth to parse and modify pixels in just about any way imaginable, and the dedication of its parent company Adobe to continue to improve it and make its tools available to as many high-level users as possible has helped it carve a rather niche in the industry. But one of the drawbacks is a steep learning curve.
If want to teach yourself more about a number of Photoshop CS3's capabilities and you prefer complex issues carved up into small, illustrated packets - that is, you're a visual learner - this book would be an excellent choice. One of the "Simplified Tips & Tricks" series, it is part of Wiley's 5-Star Visual Learning System, all of which have these features: 1. Minimal text and maximum illustrations; 2. Task-oriented, step-by-step approach; 3. Navigational aides connect instructions to illustrations; 4. Self-contained, two-page lessons; 5. Uniform layout makes it easy to read less, learn more.
It's important to note the presumption by the author that you already know Photoshop CS3 basics; the intent is not for this book to be your first tutorial, but to help you learn more shortcuts, tips, and tricks quickly and efficiently after you've mastered the fundamentals of installation, opening files, and other basic operations of the program.
Does the book succeed? Very well, in my view. Though my personal learning style tends to be more old-school, textbook oriented, I was very positively impressed with how well the book meets the goals of the 5-Star Visual Learning System. The limited commentary is direct, informative, and spare without falling into the trap of trying to be distractingly trendy, quippy, and cute. Illustrations are well done, covering much of each two-page spread, and companion instructions are clear and concise. And the Tips boxes contain really useful additional information that in effect broadens the scope of the book well beyond the original 100 topics.
Conclusion -- highly recommended. While I'm generally put off by book publisher's promises to make learning difficult topics easy, this is one example that actually succeeds.Adobe Photoshop CS3: Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks (Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks) Overview

Digital Painting Techniques, Vol. 2 ReviewAfter years of skimming through issues of ImagineFX and other "digital painting and illustration" books, it is hard to find sources of information that will provide both original and thoughtful material. The reviews were strong for the first volume so I gave it a chance, and wow what an amazing book. Picking this volume up was a no brainer. These books are clearly geared for the entertainment designer, breaking sections into subjects like vehicles, matte paintings, character designs etc, but what this book does that others don't is provide extra little details that really help demonstrate how the artist achieved the final product. One complaint I have, as do many of my fellow friends at school, as well as other reviewers online, is that many digital painting help books skim over many crucial details and use generic blanketing statements that assume that the reader has a strong foundation in photoshop knowledge. Digital Painting Techniques, both volume 1 and 2 aren't completely guiltless here, but each artist does make a nice effort within there 4-5 page tutorial to either describe little details or show it. It is important that the reader look closely at the provided images to look at things like brush settings (opacity and flow) as well as blend mode, layer controls and brush type etc.
I don't subscribe to online magazine that this book is a reprint of because I love holding a book and being able to reference it when ever I want. This book doesn't just do Dragons, swords and spaceships that other less- than successful books do, it covers things like portrait painting, a little figure drawing and one of the most important sections- custom brushes.
At a discounted price of around $30, this is impossible to pass up, new learners might find some missing details that might frustrate, but read and read again, and it is important to get on Photoshop and play yourself to work out some key ideas to creating interesting art. Pick this one up along with Volume 1, because they don't repeat, this volume is a terrific continuation to what looks to be a very promising seriesDigital Painting Techniques, Vol. 2 Overview
