Photoshop CS3 Restoration and Retouching Bible ReviewDon't be fooled by the "Restoration and Retouching Bible" title because this book offers substantially more for anyone wishing to develop a firm understanding of the post capture phase of digital photography. Starting with a comprehensive examination over all aspects of the digital image (for instance, the value of histograms), as well as how vital a file management system is; the author knows the importance of laying this foundation of knowledge before proceeding with Photoshop and retouching skills.
You are fully a third into the book before retouching and restoration is covered and Mr. Fitzgerald does not leave anything out, covering all aspects of working with old damaged photos or problem complexion; there is even a section on architecture. The big plus for this book are the sample images that can be downloaded from a web site to follow along with the work flow examples in the training, so that at each stage the reader can compare their results.
Training books are tough to write and keep engaging, but the author's tone and language shows both a strong understanding and deep commitment to the photographic image. He also does not favor Mac world; respecting the growing percentage of Photoshop users on Windows as well. Adobe Photoshop for Underwater Photographers ReviewThis book is really the third book in a series by the photographer - writer team of Jack and Sue Drafahl. First is Digital Imaging for the Underwater Photographer. Second is Master Guide for Underwater Digital Photography. All three published by Amherst Media.
The reason for this book is that underwater photography, under the best of circumstances (and how often do you find those) the filtering and color changing effects of water tend to produce images that are simply not what we want to see in a photograph. Colors tend to get washed out, after all, the fish doesn't want to stand out too much. Fish that stand out tend to become dinner for somne other fish. But in looking at the picture, we want to see the fish. Photoshop is the answer.
This book is not a tutorial on how to get started with Photoshop. It presumes a certain base knowledge so that it can spend its time on the particular needs, problems and solutions for the problems facing people editing underwater photographs. Essential ZBrush (Wordware Game and Graphics Library) ReviewGood book, much better than Wayne Robeson's dvd's, especially if you are an American, as his accent can seem to be inaudible at times. In addition, with his dvd's he often goes off on tangents. However, the same zbrush tasks are more clearly explained in simpler terms in his book. Whoever proofread his writing for the book did an excellent job, enabling him to stay focused on the tasks at hand and articulated for the layperson. His sense of humor comes off much better in the book as well, preventing you from falling alseep or getting bored with all the technical jargon. The highlights of the book are the excellent zbrush workflow concepts which are explained thoroughly and are supported by specific examples. One example is the thorough explanation of creating normal maps and why they are used in game character creation instead of displacement maps (which can cause your system to take a huge render hit). Most folks don't have a render farm in their living room. A basic understanding of zbrush is recommended before reading this book, but overall a good asset to have for reference and inspiration.Essential ZBrush (Wordware Game and Graphics Library) Overview

Simply stated, after stumbling around in other Illustrator books, this one at last is what I've been looking for all along. All computer books should be designed and written like this one. It's organized like a classroom lesson guide, and the step by step instructions are concise, immediate, and so far as I can tell, leave nothing out. The overall impression is of having a truly competent instructor leaning over your shoulder. By the time I finished the introductory lesson, "A quick tour of Adobe Illustrator CS2," I'd learned more about this wonderful application than I had learned on my own in many months of blood, sweat, and tears! Not to mention undoing some bad habits I had developed, and showing me the quickest and most effective ways to accomplish the bedrock basics of Illustrator. After all, the book was written by the same people who invent each new release of Illustrator, so the logic of their approach is... well, logical. Add to this an instinctive feel for the mystical science of teaching, and you have in my opinion the perfect book for really learning Adobe Illustrator CS2. I heartily recommend it! Photoshop CS4 Down & Dirty Tricks ReviewI have a couple of Scott's books (and love his style) but my Down & Dirty Tricks book just arrived and it's quickly becoming my favorite. He's just nailed all these cool effects that I've sat there and wondered "How'd they do that?". I'm already playing around with some, and having a ton of fun learning.
I'm about a 5 on a scale of 1-10 in Photoshop and I found the steps very easy to follow. The real beauty is that the book has given me techniques and ideas that I can put to work right now - I didn't have to read the whole book to use it. You can dive in anywhere and learn techniques you can apply to your own projects. I haven't looked at it yet but there's a companion web download page too. Just my opinion, but I think even a more experienced Photoshop user can get a lot out of this book (it's perfect for beginners or intermediate users, so if you think you could teach your own class, maybe review it in the book shop first).
Sometimes I see a look I want to replicate, but it's hard to know where to start, I like how Scott breaks it down. There's even a cool chapter on 3D, which I have been afraid to even play with so far (of course it looks easy when it's step-by-step). These techniques will seriously make me look like a Photoshop guru and that will put money in my pocket (which I really need right now).Photoshop CS4 Down & Dirty Tricks Overview

Adobe Illustrator CS3 How-Tos: 100 Essential Techniques ReviewI purchased "AI CS3 How-Tos: 100 Essential Techniques" because I consider myself to be a beginner with AI, and wanted a book that would provide a basic introduction to AI CS3. Although the book does a good job in covering most basic techniques (as well as some not-so-basic techniques), I found that it really was too basic, and lacked the detail (as well as examples) to address many of the questions that I had. Most How-tos are 2 pages long and are pretty skeletal. I was surprised at the absence of color (odd in an illustrator book?) and that some of the screenshots were two small to clearly show the author's intent. In all, I couldn't figure out who this book would be for. CS3 is a complex, professional level application. Adobe Photoshop Restoration & Retouching (3rd Edition) ReviewPhotograph retouching has long been a process where a picture has been improved to remove the background, clean up a bad light reflection or other faults with the picture. And this book does an excellent job of telling you how to retouch such pictures.
More important, though is the sections in this book on photo restoration. How do you take the old picture of that Civil War ancestor, or that snapshot of Grandmother when she was a young girl and make it look like a portrait that just came out of the camera today.
Although the book is very good on retouching, there simply aren't that many books on restoration. And Ms. Eisman is a master at restoring old images. In this book there are full-color, step-by-step examples of rescuing heirloom originals suffering from mold, cracks, torn edges, scratches. There is even a section on restoring missing parts of an image. Such as using a person's right arm to replace the left that had been torn off.
Besides the coverage of areas not usually seen, this book further has a writing style that clearly and succinctly explains each step in the process. This book is highly recommended.Adobe Photoshop Restoration & Retouching (3rd Edition) Overview

Adobe Illustrator CS4 Classroom in a Book ReviewEver since I got my hands on Adobe products, I find that Adobe's Classroom in a Book (CIAB) series always delivery quality instruction that would bring me from any level to at least intermediate level. The latest Illustrator CS4 is no exception.
I bought this book for a user who has never had any experience with Adobe products, within hours, the user was able to finish the tutorials without breaking a sweat. I further assigned the user some tasks, and the results were quite to my satisfaction.
Before CIAB, I borrowed "Illustrator CS4 for Dummies", honestly, the book has made both the user and I dumber. The author has spent lengthy time discussing various different concepts in chapter 1, the information has nothing to do with getting hands on with the software. In fact, the information is way too technical to be suitable for its "Dummies" title.
I would recommend this book to those who wish to get hands on with Illustrator, which is an excellent piece of software to learn after you have reasonable skill with Photoshop.Adobe Illustrator CS4 Classroom in a Book Overview

Adobe Photoshop CS3 One-On-One Review§
It has been a long while since I have been as enthusiastic about a book as this one. Deke McClelland has targeted my demographic with a practiced eye: people who use Photoshop and who want to use it more -- but who are completely intimidated and lost in the bowels of that "vast and ungainly behemoth." It helps that the author, who clearly loves this tool, maintains a refreshing irreverence toward it.
The book is organized in a "Read - Watch - Do" way. The "watch" part comes from the 3 hours of instructional video that is included with the book DVD. The DVD also contains example files and other material that McClelland shows how to use to set up your copy of Photoshop in the most useful manner.
The instructional videos blew me away with their information density. There is incredible content here. So far going through the book, I found it valuable to watch each more than once. The video material does not repeat the written instruction -- it complements it.
The book itself is beautiful and well-organized. It has a wide format that lies flat to make following along while at the mouse or keyboard easier. It is 500 pages long but is not overwhelming, like a reference. All the material is encompassed in 12 lessons. These 12 lessons teach the basic skills needed to use the tool effectively whether your focus is the Web or print.
A note of interest to those who have not upgraded to CS3 yet: I noticed in sharing this book that people with CS2 will be quite comfortable following along. The author clears away whatever obstacles may come up for you.
One last note: I know the editorial review above says there are only 2 hours of video with the book, not 3 as I stated. I have no idea why they rounded off 2 hours and 54 minutes that way. I guess they figured, as I do, that the features of this book could be understated and still be worthy of superlatives.
