Fabric + Paint + Thread = Fabulous (That Patchwork Place) ReviewThis book caught my eye as my niece is a painter and I am a quilter. The projects in this book are something that she and I can do together.
The first step is to get your "picture" onto fabric. Once you have accomplished that (and the instructions on how to do this are provided), you then need to do the thread work. One way that I can't wait to try is to draw, for example, a leaf onto water soluble stabilizer. In a pinch hoop, place a piece of tulle with the stabilizer over it. This makes a "free standing" leaf that you can sew onto your quilt or wall hanging. I think I will be daring enough to try to do it direction on my finished item - thus saving one sewing step.
Each project has a photo of the item, a finished size, techniques used and a skill level. The directions for completing the item are clear and have graphics to show you in greater detail the steps being described.
The book contains five projects: three wall hangings, a quilt and a table runner with matching napkins. This last item would be a great place to start as it is smaller and more manageable. Next Steps in Altered Photo Artistry: New Ways to Transform Images for Fabric & Quilt Art ReviewBeth's follow on book is in the same style as her Altered Photo Artistry, and thankfully does not duplicate the instructions in the first book. It has the same very clear layout and instructions.
The book shows you how to apply all the various filters and effects in Photoshop Elements to your photos, with clear illustrations of each effect, so you know just how to produce them yourself. Beth also gives approximate ranges for all the adjustables on the filters. You can spend weeks playing with all the variables, and it is good to have a starting point. This section including colour adjustments, is the meat of the book, but it also covers a few options for collage or repeating images which you could then print onto fabric.
