An Introduction to Japanese Calligraphy ReviewThis is a decent, informative book, with plenty of illustrations and descriptions of the major concepts in shodô --- including kana calligraphy. However, I'm afraid its intended audience is unclear. People who have access to a shodô teacher already know everything the book covers, and if you want to learn by yourself you'll find it lacking in details (the section on the elementary "ei" character, for example, doesn't have detailed instructions on how to do each stroke). An Introduction to Japanese Calligraphy Overview

My First Book of Chinese Calligraphy ReviewThis is a great book for introducing kids to Chinese calligraphy. The book is nicely printed on high-quality paper and shows a sweet little girl. It discusses the origins of Chinese characters, stroke order and styles of calligraphy, among other things. I would not recommend it for grown-ups but it's a great tool for kids, to engage their interest. My First Book of Chinese Calligraphy Overview

Chinese Brush Painting Techniques: A Beginner's Guide to Painting Birds and Flowers ReviewThis book covers the basic tool requirements, the six general rules governing paintings, and the four paragons inside of the first four chapters. The artist also has brush skill, adding to the overall effect.
The negatives - the book calls for colors... winsor cotman... 4 dollars a tube, which roughly adds to $30 in addition to the traditionally demanded ink stick, ink grinding stone, and brush(he suggests 2 brushes), and ink well(he suggests a water well and an 7 petal flower inkwell at least).
He also suggests newsprint as a cost effective solution... yet at 40lb which newsprint is, you need heavy painting felt under it to be useful. 100 sheet packs of rice paper from Yasumoto is probably a better idea.
In fact... the book is exceptional, and despite the chinese brush painting name, the Japanese manufacturer Yasumoto is quite possibly the perfect tool compliment. Yasumoto all-purpose brush small, Yasumoto grinding stone, Yasumoto ink stick, Yasumoto 100 sheet rice paper packs are all obtainable in America... whereas the decent art companies in China do not appear to have their products available to use in America.Chinese Brush Painting Techniques: A Beginner's Guide to Painting Birds and Flowers Overview

Chinese Calligraphy Made Easy: A Structured Course in Creating Beautiful Brush Lettering ReviewThis is a fabulous introductory how-to book on Chinese calligraphy. The text and examples are large, the overall presentation of the material is clear and artful. Using this book is really easy.
The publisher's description says:
- Unique, systematic teaching method builds
from basic to advanced brushstrokes,
enabling you to create new words with each
brushstroke you learn
- Two fold-out cover flaps carry key
information to remind you of the anatomy
of each character as you progress
- Organized into a series of lessons and
projects which, as they are worked
through, build the reader's knowledge
- Includes beginner-level projects for
greeting cards, decorative ceramics, and
calligraphic artwork
Some 100 characters are covered. There are chapters on preparing the brushes, holding and loading the brush, wrist and elbow movements, pressing and lifting the brush, various brushstrokes, making a traditional writing book, a greeting card, the five golden rules of Chinese calligraphy, mounting a xuan paper artwork, and more. An appendix shows where Chinese calligraphy supplies can be obtained in the U.S and U.K., each listing has a website.
I happily give this book a full five stars.Chinese Calligraphy Made Easy: A Structured Course in Creating Beautiful Brush Lettering Overview

The Way of the Brush: Painting Techniques of China and Japan ReviewThis is one of the best books about Chinese painting for those who want to understand not just Chinese painting techniques, but also something of the history and variety of traditional Chinese brush painting. The one drawback is the usage of the outdated Wade-Giles romanization (the book was first published in 1962), but that is merely a trivial annoyance compared to the wealth of information the author provides. Most instructional painting books are written by painters who focus on their own style, and give no credit to all the masters who have gone before them. This book shows many examples of paintings by master painters (ancient and modern), along with examples from the author's own teacher, master painter P'u Ch'uan. He thoroughly describes the different painting styles, with excellent examples, and many bibliographical references. I especially liked the fact that he gave 7 different versions of translations of "the Six Principles" of Hsieh Ho; by combining the common threads in all of them, their real meaning becomes clearer.
Another subject he talks about, although briefly, is the importance of understanding brush strokes in order to be better prepared to deal with forgeries and copies. This subject is almost universally ignored in books on Chinese painting, and yet it is very important. I have seen a painting in a catalog from one of the big auction houses that on first glance looked like another one of Li Ke-ran's many water buffalo paintings, and was attributed to him by the (anonymous) seller. Upon closer scrutiny of the brush strokes used, it was obviously a fake. And I am by no means a true expert.
If you are a beginner with no teacher to help you, then you will probably need other books, too. But for anyone who wants to learn about the history and traditions of Chinese painting, this is the ideal book. The Way of the Brush: Painting Techniques of China and Japan Overview
