The Art of Calligraphy & Lettering: Master techniques for traditional and contemporary handwritten styles (Collector's Series) ReviewWhile written perhaps for those simply wanting to learn calligraphy, the ideas, techniques and materials presented within will be valuable to any artist: painter, printmaker, product designer, etc. The last chapter by John Stevens is particularly valuable as it shows that good lettering isn't just for wedding invitations and certificates, but for ANY form of communication (book type, package design, even road signs). He encourages us to open our eyes and look at how much lettering (both good and bad) is around us that we may not be noticing. Most importantly, he stresses that we must PRACTICE if we expect to achieve mastery. There are excellent and inspiring examples throughout. I am new to paper arts and I have a few other books with sections on decorating your own paper (marbling, paste papers, block printing, batik, etc., etc.) This is the only book, though, that gives enough guidance (including photographic images of all the tools needed and the steps involved) to give me the confidence to do the gorgeous techniques on my own. How to Build Realistic Model Railroad Scenery, Third Edition (Model Railroader Books) ReviewI have owned this book for several years and refer to it often. It is not just for model railroaders. It is perfect for anyone that wants to build dioramas of any type that look realistic. I build fantasy dioramas of castles, knights, dungeons etc. and this book is perfectly suited for that.
One of the best things about the book is that it is oversized which makes it comfortable to handle while building and allows for lots of pics and info on one page which is very helpful in this type of hobby and it covers all the major bases of diorama building from the landscape shell to waterscenes.
One of the best things about this book, which few people consider, is that it is all about "water soluble techniques". Which means the easier to master techniques and the safer techniques.(no toxic chemicals or fumes)which is important especially if you have children in your household.

Face Painting (Klutz Kit) ReviewExcellent, easy ideas for face painting at a party. The book includes great tips and step by step instructions. It even includes 12 punch out cards, each with its own instruction, that you can allow kids to choose a design from - and the book has an envelope to store the cards! The paint is by Wolfe Brothers - a professional quality face paint manufacturer. Probably not the right book for a professional face painter, but it is full of kid pleasing manageable designs for us non-artist parents or even school aged kids! Speedball Textbook for Pen and Brush Lettering ReviewThis isn't a huge book, but I really like it. It contains many sample alphabets using calligraphy pen or brush stroke techniques. (It seems like when I look through most calligraphy books, they don't have many sample alphabets). Although I probably have one standard calligraphy style, I like to dabble with ways to letter differently.
Besides offering a good number of lettering techniques, this book also shows some examples of some really beautiful calligraphy works. Some are just simple cards and some would proabably be worth framing. Several examples show how to play with calligraphy and create a visual with the letters on the page. The ideas are absolutely fabulous and will inspire you to explore the creative world of lettering.Speedball Textbook for Pen and Brush Lettering Overview
