Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual: For Everyone from Beginner to Pro ReviewBobbi Brown isn't about makeup trickery and techniques designed to alter the shape of a feature or make an average woman look like a drag Marilyn Monroe. If you are looking for this kind of book--as I suspect some of the other reviewers were--look elsewhere. What she is about is teaching a woman to look and feel her best, and this book does an excellent job of showing each and every step, in a way that a novice can understand and a pro can appreciate. Not everyone may feel they need this kind of instruction...but then why read a book called "Makeup Manual" if you already know it all?
Unlike her other books, which focus quite a bit on how health and lifestyle affect beauty, Bobbi's Makeup Manual really is dedicated to makeup artistry. A beginning makeup artist will find the detailed instructions on dramatic smoky eyes, false eyelash application, and how to work on a photo shoot especially useful. Bobbi also delves into extreme color, editorial looks, makeup as art, and tribal and geisha looks, all of which are territory uncovered in her previous books.
To summarize, if you appreciate Bobbi Brown's aesthetic, you will enjoy this book. If you want to know how to create basic and dramatic looks in a way that is pretty and modern, you will love this book. If you are a new makeup artist, you need this book. If you want to know how to transform Andy Rooney into Audrey Hepburn with lipstick, glitter, and seventeen concealers, you will hate this book. If you already know it all...write your own book. I'll look forward to reading it.

Bobbi Brown Beauty Rules: Fabulous Looks, Beauty Essentials, and Life Lessons ReviewI like the overall theme of this book. Yes, it is a beauty book, but it isn't just a bunch of tips on how to apply eyeliner properly. It talks about confidence, eating right and taking care of ALL of you. The information in it is about building up the whole girl, not just putting a layer of color over what ever it is you don't like about yourself.
There are a few times in the book that it seemed like a few girls were over-done, but that wasn't emphasized so much as finding the right amount for you. It gives you tips for your skin tone, skin condition and emphasizing the positive. It talks about every day and prom make-up. The stories in it are real, engaging and sometimes funny. There are also interviews with models and talk with sports celebrities. Overall, this book is a wonderful resource.
I would however say that marketing it for "twenties" as it states on the cover is a bit much. Unless it is a twenty that has absolutely no idea about make-up or basic self-care or possibly someone just leaving their teens, this idea is a bit far-fetched. Most of the tips in here are not written for a grown woman to use. They are more like a starter guide that helps you decide what you're trying to do and how to get there.
It is a great book with a wealth of information in it. I would recommend it for any young girl after the age where The Care & Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls (American Girl Library) becomes useless or too immature, though that book is great up to early teens, in my opinion. But, if you have a teen that you want to give them a book full of great information written in a way that will hopefully teach them while boosting their confidence, this is a great choice.Bobbi Brown Beauty Rules: Fabulous Looks, Beauty Essentials, and Life Lessons Overview

The New Beauty Secrets: Your Ultimate Guide to a Flawless Face ReviewWhen I found out that Laura Mericer wrote a book I rushed out the door to find a copy. Well I was unpleasantly surprised to find a lack of..........well......Beauty Secrets. Very few photographs are included except for celebrities. There are line/charcoal drawings that are cute but not particularily helpful for putting on my makeup in the morning. There are no before and after photos, no interesting color combinations of eyeshadows or lip color, no pictures of the correct brush/tool to use for a specific application.....there is nothing unique about this book. I have been a customer of her products for going on 6 years and I know her cosmetic line is full of interesting products but none get showcased here. This book should be titled "Laura Mercier's musings on the Philosophy of Beauty with all my celebrity friends".
If you are seeking a book on how to apply makeup then go with Robert Jones, Kevyn Aucoin, Linda Mason etc. These book have BEAUTIFUL full page color photos. In these other books there are models and celebrities shown but also moms, sisters, lovers and friends with lots of information on how to apply makeup.The New Beauty Secrets: Your Ultimate Guide to a Flawless Face Overview
