Draw & Paint Fantasy Females ReviewImpact, which publishes art instructional books, generally does a good job with the books they print; some are of better quality than others, however. "Draw and Paint Fantasy Females" is a decent how-to-draw book, but unexceptional, though it does offer a few good tips.
What this book won't tell you, and what every artist must eventually learn, is no single book will fully teach you how to draw anything, let alone the human figure. A book can give you a good start and provide some inspiration, etc., but you will need many books and years of practice before you master drawing.
With that said, Tom Fleming, the writer/artist of this book, who is obviously talented (I've seen his work in other venues previous to this book) does a decent job of outlining the process of drawing and painting the female figure. The book is divided up into five chapters and closes with a gallery of Mr. Fleming's work. It is, basically, of the "omnibus" type of how-to-draw books, which, instead of focusing on a couple of techniques, really tries to teach them all and spends about 2 pages on each. Here you'll find discussions of drawing and painting supplies and techniques, anatomy and figure construction, poses, drawing the face, hair and clothing, and also different female character archetypes (sorceress, warrior, faerie, etc.). However, each of these segments is only covered superficially, in general, though there are good tutorials and worthwhile pieces of advice sprinkled about.
Probably the most useful bit of information that is included are Mr. Fleming's techniques for drawing and painting metallic effects and for putting shine on clothing. I've never seen these very challenging topics covered so well in a book before, and those are what sold me on this purchase.
In closing, "Draw & Paint Fantasy Females" is a generally good book on drawing, but tries to do too much in too small a space. However, it is worthwhile for its excellent tips and for its general quality.Draw & Paint Fantasy Females Overview

Drawing & Painting Fantasy Beasts: Bring to Life the Creatures and Monsters of Other Realms ReviewI bought the Drawing & Painting Fantasy Beasts and the Fantasy Figures books for our high school library. The kids really enjoy them and so do I. I just signed on to see what else might be in this series and to order more copies. While these books may not appeal to everyone (not enough step-by-step for true beginners), the layout and abundance of good pictures and ideas will grab most readers and artists.Drawing & Painting Fantasy Beasts: Bring to Life the Creatures and Monsters of Other Realms Overview

Draw & Paint Fantasy Art Warriors & Heroes ReviewAn excellent how-to book! Professionally written, easy to follow instructions highlighted with fantastic paintings by one of the industries most talented and inspiring artists. Having personally worked with Alan during the past 3 years, I have found him to be a consummate professional in every aspect; Elite skill level, easy to work with and very accommodating--wanting to do the best work possible on every project. This book is certainly no exception. Book covers all the important elements of creating great and dynamic heroic artwork as materials needed, proper anatomy proportions, step by step figure proportions, weapons, color theory and mood and the proper use of lighting techniques for the type of atmosphere you may want to capture.
Such legendary warriors as Attila the Hun, Boudicca the Celt, Penthesilia-Queen of the Amazons, the Greek demi-god Achilles, the Norse god Thor and many others (10 in all) are covered from the very basic initial pencil stick figure sketch all the way through to the fully finished painted piece. Each personality comes complete with several "artist's tips" to aid you creating even more detailed and impressive images.
So, whether you are a beginner or seasoned professional, traditional or digital practitioner, one can find a good amount of information and ideas from this book.Draw & Paint Fantasy Art Warriors & Heroes Overview

How to Draw Zombies: Discover the secrets to drawing, painting, and illustrating the undead (Fantasy Underground) ReviewThe book is amazing and includes some great tips on how-to...Illustrations are very pretty, the author is obviously talented...but that's about it for the good part...
If you are a beginner or do not have a background in arts you probably won't find that book very useful.
The author expects you to have the advanced drawing and painting skills, that's why he does not explain the details of line weight, texture making, color choosing (etc, you continue it:).
The other thing I did not like about the book is that the author uses the most advanced technology to create digital illustrations. I found myself struggling with applying his tips for using the tablet to my decent bamboo. He used and explained how to use the intuos cintiq which (unless you are a professional illustrator) you probably don't have (and you probably don't need it if digital drawing is just a hobby for you (costs about $2000)).
Anyways, great book for inspiration, and good tips for artists, although, beginners won't find the book that useful.
Apologize for any mistakes:)How to Draw Zombies: Discover the secrets to drawing, painting, and illustrating the undead (Fantasy Underground) Overview

OtherWorlds: How to Imagine, Paint and Create Epic Scenes of Fantasy ReviewYep. There have been quite a few artbooks this year, and I liked a lot of them, in particular another very recent release, "Middle-Earth: Visions of a Modern Myth " by Donato Giancola, but this one is even better. It ranks alongside John Howe's artbook ( 2007) from Impact as the best one I have seen from this publisher, and alongside the great Charles Vess artbook from Dark Horse ( 2009) as my overall Fantasy art favorite.
Stunning, stunning illustrations. Needless to say I am a huge fan of Tom Kidd's work and if you are too, you will find here a vast array of dazzling work, as well as how-to instructions. Various topics are detailed, as you can also see in Amazon's search inside function. Kidd is one of the best illustrators the SFF field has ever had and this wonderful book underlines that even more.
Highly recommended.OtherWorlds: How to Imagine, Paint and Create Epic Scenes of Fantasy Overview

Expressive Figure Drawing: New Materials, Concepts, and Techniques ReviewHaving already created two wonderful art-instruction DVDs on creativity and on figure art, Bill Buchman now conquers print as splendidly, with this jam-packed, beautifully designed book from highly respected art-book publisher Watson-Guptill.
The great thing about Bill Buchman's art instruction is how thoroughly he blends what art instruction traditionally separates: he innovatively uses technique to open up your creativity, so the soul and expressiveness of your figure art can bloom, even as you learn the foundational concepts and principles.
Mr Buchman's openminded, lighthearted artistic style is about fluidity and flow, free-spirited boldness blended with joy and fun, the pure poetic *art* of a picture appearing from the simple essence of revealing form from what you see. With an almost-zen-oriental philosophy that focuses on the process not the result, Mr Buchman shows you how to truly observe what you see and how to use gesture, mass, line, structure, shape, volume, and color, as well as speed, tempo, and rythym, to keep your art loose and free all the time, to let the line, the ink, the paint, have a life of its own. "To draw is to risk," Mr Buchman reassures us -- and there is really nothing to fear.
The only drawback to Expressive Figure Drawing being in book form is that I found myself missing Mr Buchman's pleasant teaching voice. On his DVD, Mr Buchman is a friendly, pleasant, encouraging teacher, rather gentle and affirming in his approach. Yet, like a Buchman DVD, this book feels bounteously full: it is positively *loaded* with information and insight. Mr Buchman explains things clearly and thoroughly. There is one art technique and exercise after another, and Mr Buchman reveals his methods for developing proficiency with gouache, charcoal, conte crayons, rollerball and gel pens, ink wash, sumi brush, pastels, acrylic ink, water-soluble crayons, art-chalk chunkies, and even a reed pen.
Mr Buchman's art is not based on realism. This book will not teach you to more realistically draw the human face, the hands and feet. In fact, Mr Buchman favors the torso and persuasively argues that trying to render too much detail in face, hands, and feet can ruin a work faster than anything.
But this book *will* help you open up your art and make it more creative and fluid and wonderful and enjoyable.
I heartily recommend it, for artists of all levels.

The DC Comics Guide to Digitally Drawing Comics ReviewI was excited when I first learned about this book coming out because it's difficult for me to set up a normal artist's station in my house. Not knowing who this Freddie Williams guy was, I ended up going to his website and checking him out. It was here that I first became dismayed.
His website has a section labeled "DigiArt Quick Tools," in which one can find several Photoshop tools Freddie has available. These include several variations of his MasterPage file, which tend to cost a little bit of money (the bundle pack that gives you all the Master Pages runs I think about $125). I also noticed a blurb in which Freddie mentions that an entire section of the upcoming book is devoted to the Master Page. I immediately started thinking that the book was going to end up being a $15 commercial for the various tools he has to offer.
Never have I been so glad to be so dead wrong.
The section on Master Pages walks you through the process of making your own Master Page, and while he mentions his website, he never tells the reader to go buy anything. Instead, he teaches you how to do it yourself. In fact, there's only one thing that Freddie tells the reader to download, and that's the perspective tool that he created... and its free (as is a generic version of the Master Page, if you don't want to make your own or pay money for a company-specific Page).
As far as the rest of the book goes, it was a massive wake-up call in regards to realizing how powerful and how fast creating sequential artwork on the computer is. In fact, it seems that Freddie's main goal is to get the reader to create better artwork, faster, and he constantly discusses ways to make your work faster and more streamlined.
Be warned, though... this is NOT a "how to draw" book. If you don't know how to draw, this book won't be that helpful to you. This book is more accurately described as a "how to use the computer to draw" book. Additionally, if you don't know how to do any basic drawing in Photoshop, you might want to learn, quick. I have a very basic understanding of how to draw and paint with Photoshop, and this book has my mind racing with all the possibilities I have available to me now. Be prepared to think and imagine when you read the book.
Not every aspect of Freddie's work method will work for everyone, and he acknowledges fact. He describes his methods to the reader, and for key areas offers alternative paths for the reader to take that may be more comfortable for the reader.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes, I did. Did I learn anything from this book? Almost every step of the way. Would I recommend this book to the serious hobbyist or the artist getting into the comics field? Without a doubt and with no reservations, yes!!!!The DC Comics Guide to Digitally Drawing Comics Overview
