Carol Rosinski is a knowledgeable, gentle authority who will take you by the hand and talk to you while you "get started" learning to draw. From the preliminary basics (pencils, paper and erasers) to discussions of line, shape and form, and then on to more advanced topics such as combining multiple images to create a subject and using a computer to emphasize different elements in a drawing, Getting Started gives concrete advice and tons of encouragement every step of the way.
Rosinski goes beyond simple demonstration to explain the reasons and feelings that make each element essential to a good drawing. She never wants you to accept what she says as true just because she says it: she wants you to experience for yourself the point she is discussing. For example, to the perennial beginner's question ("How much detail should I include?"), she offers pairs of drawings designed to be viewed at different distances (p. 43) and asks you to reflect on what you see.
Any good drawing book will stress the importance of locating the light source in a scene and understanding how light defines objects and their shadows, but Rosinski is not content simply to make those statements and leave it at that. Instead, she presents photographs of a large pumpkin taken at 5 different times during the day, so that the reader can actually see the effects of changes light on an object. Similarly, her discussion of shape and the importance of positive and negative space begins with an exercise in which the student "deconstructs" a photograph by cutting around the main subject and separating it from its background. By completing this exercise (or viewing the excellent photographs Rosinski includes as illustrations), the student can see exactly how line functions to define an object's shape as well as how it serves as a boundary between positive and negative space.

Natural History Painting: With the Eden Project ReviewI ordered this book, not knowing what was really inside. I am pleasantly surprised. As an artist for over 40 years, I know that the materials information is excellent. It gives you choices on what to buy, shows you the difference between different brands, tells you how to set up and care for your equipment, even gives you exercises in becoming familiar with the different pencils, brushes and paints. Next, it tells you how to approach a subject, what you should know about the subject and where to find it, even has you list adjectives that you need to keep in mind as you draw a subject, then takes you through an exercise that is really a journey of drawing a subject, the steps from blocking in to refinement to the final shading and highlighting, including texture. It tells how to start a sketchbook and has an exercise, like in all the chapters. The chapter on color theory and mixing is fantastic. It shows you how to mix all the colors you need from the 6 paint colors recommended in the materials chapter, and shows color pages of exercises of allot of color mixes. Every exercise is really wonderful for both the beginner and advanced artist that needs help with natural history painting. It even includes directions and and an exercise in mixing those numerous greens that are so essential in depicting nature accurately. In the chapter on painting, the examples are in watercolor, the most widely used medium of natural history painters. It even illustrates, in color, the most common mistakes on handling your water and gives you exercises for practice on handling water and paint for the best results. There is a nice chapter on examples and exercises on handling texture. Then the author uses the rest of the book to address numerous natural history subjects, each with it's own chapter, i.e. rocks, bird and their feathers, bugs, sea-life and spirals, bones, a great chapter on iridescence, and finishes up with a chapter on display and mimicry. The last chapter encourages you to use your knowledge in lots of other ways, from sculpture and mathematics to applied and fine art to decorating a gorgeous wedding cake through to drawing and painting greeting cards. Anyone interested in natural history would enjoy this book, but for those of us who are fans of natural history books like "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" by Anne Dillard that have been itching to draw and paint the subjects we find so fascinating, this is a great place to start. You know how it is in studying natural history, the more you know, the more you have to learn. Painting natural history subjects is a great way to learn about them. You don't really know a subject until you are forced to look close at the intricate details and try to depict your subject by drawing, painting, and modeling a sculpture that represents it in realistic art.Natural History Painting: With the Eden Project Overview

The Drawing Bible ReviewI do not know what kind of background the previous reviewer has but as artist and art teacher I highly recommend this book. The idea of valuing it according to price, like some kind of bean counter is absurd.
The book covers the fundamentals and the drawings are superb. It is easy to carry and also serves as a continuous source of style and inspiration.
As for the price it is worth every penny. If you want beautiful though realistic images to act as an ideal and have enough intelligence not to need Parental consent to see the nudes in the book please DISREGARD THE FATUOUS AND INCREDULOUS REVIEW ABOVE.
The book dose exactly what it claims and dose so with great art, style and composition. Craig Nelson is one of the most accomplished draftsman of this era and has made, and shows great choices.
Need to be taken by the hand through everything pertaining to drawing then head for your nearest art school, as no book can do what a serious series of classes in drawing fundamentals can do. However don't trash a perfectly fine and inspirational book for the price or the heck of it.
And, yes I do own the book and am very pleased with it. So are my many students.The Drawing Bible Overview

He wanted me to buy it then, but I chose to order it through Amazon for the better price. My son & I, who are both artists,like the different examples showing how different masters would paint a dragon. This book would be helpful inspiration for teen or adult artists to explore new techniques and design styles. It shows DaVinci, Rubens, Van Gogh, and Picasso styles and techniques, as well as a short bio of each artist. I think it would be too advance for little artists as a teach yourself book. The great thing about Bill Buchman's art instruction is how thoroughly he blends what art instruction traditionally separates: he innovatively uses technique to open up your creativity, so the soul and expressiveness of your figure art can bloom, even as you learn the foundational concepts and principles.
Mr Buchman's openminded, lighthearted artistic style is about fluidity and flow, free-spirited boldness blended with joy and fun, the pure poetic *art* of a picture appearing from the simple essence of revealing form from what you see. With an almost-zen-oriental philosophy that focuses on the process not the result, Mr Buchman shows you how to truly observe what you see and how to use gesture, mass, line, structure, shape, volume, and color, as well as speed, tempo, and rythym, to keep your art loose and free all the time, to let the line, the ink, the paint, have a life of its own. "To draw is to risk," Mr Buchman reassures us -- and there is really nothing to fear.
The only drawback to Expressive Figure Drawing being in book form is that I found myself missing Mr Buchman's pleasant teaching voice. On his DVD, Mr Buchman is a friendly, pleasant, encouraging teacher, rather gentle and affirming in his approach. Yet, like a Buchman DVD, this book feels bounteously full: it is positively *loaded* with information and insight. Mr Buchman explains things clearly and thoroughly. There is one art technique and exercise after another, and Mr Buchman reveals his methods for developing proficiency with gouache, charcoal, conte crayons, rollerball and gel pens, ink wash, sumi brush, pastels, acrylic ink, water-soluble crayons, art-chalk chunkies, and even a reed pen.
Mr Buchman's art is not based on realism. This book will not teach you to more realistically draw the human face, the hands and feet. In fact, Mr Buchman favors the torso and persuasively argues that trying to render too much detail in face, hands, and feet can ruin a work faster than anything.
But this book *will* help you open up your art and make it more creative and fluid and wonderful and enjoyable.
I heartily recommend it, for artists of all levels.

How to Draw What You See (Practical Art Books) ReviewThe beginning of this book and the idea behind it are simple and straightforward: behind every object you see there is some "skeletal" figure made of simple geometric shapes - the cube, the cone, the cylinder and the sphere. If you know how to draw these and string them together you can in theory make any drawing you want. Sounds simple, right? Well, it is. Only the book doesn't fully realize its potential.
The first part of the book which deals with these basic shapes, how to draw them, shade them, etc ... starts out well enough. But by the time the author reaches the more advanced subjects, such as drawing nature, portraits and the human figure the book degenerates into yet another book filled with the author implicitly saying, "look at how well I can draw!", filling pages upon pages with finished, beautiful drawing a beginner can never hope to achieve. For example: when discussing feet and hands, the author provides two drawings of the foot and briefly tells the student he should observe the foot and note its proportions. Really? And I thought I should stand on my head and sing the star spangled banner. Sorry for the sarcasm, but that is not an acceptable way of teaching how to draw the foot.
Another example: when discussing figure drawing the author does not explain the figure's anatomy. Rather he says how he has followed his 14 years old daughter around the house and drew her in various natural positions. The reader is then presented with the final sketches, which by the way are very beautiful sketches. How did he achieve them? What are the principles he followed? How should one go about practicing sketching people? That the book does not reveal.
It seems to me the main problem of this book is that it tries to do too much - portraits, still life, landscapes, charcoal, wash, all in one short book? The more topics you choose to cover, the less space you can devote to each. I think it would have been much better had the author devoted more space to basic issues such as perspective, shading and textures, rather than rush headlong into complex topics. As it stands I cannot be sure whether it is intended for absolute beginners or advanced students.
In short, this may be a good source for inspiration or for tips for people on many levels, but definitely not your main source of information.How to Draw What You See (Practical Art Books) Overview
