The Illustrator's Bible: The Complete Sourcebook of Tips, Tricks and Time-Saving Techniques in Oil, Alkyd, Acrylic, Gouache, Casein, Watercolor, Dyes, ... Pastel, Colored Pencil and Mixed Media ReviewSo many self education books for artists claim to be definitive, comprehensive, or the only book you'll ever need. I don't know if this is the only book you'll need, but it is a cheaper alternative to paying tuition at an art college. And, unlike many how-to books (and some art colleges), Rob Howard gives very specific and detailed instructions. He's light on the motivational inspiration and heavy on technique. Afterall, a working illustrator (the book's target) doesn't need to get in touch with the inner artist, but rather needs tools to get the inner art out onto the client's desk.
Additionally, Rob Howard is quite talented. Often times people with Howard's gifts are so busy with paying customers that they don't have time to put together such a quality book. Every illustration is professional quality and an inspiration in itself!
The book is packed with photos and illustrations. He lists by name and sometimes manufacturer exactly what materials you need. Covers topics from Prismacolor pencils on Denril to Friskets and masking to pastels, acrylics and airbrushing....etc.
It's only weakness is that it's due for an update. First published in '92 before the internet explosion and before Adobe Photoshop and Synthetik Studio Artist became powerful enough computer based tools, this book focuses entirely on natural media. Just the same, an illustrator looking to set him or herself appart from the pack might want to set aside the software and use the proven techniques in this book!The Illustrator's Bible: The Complete Sourcebook of Tips, Tricks and Time-Saving Techniques in Oil, Alkyd, Acrylic, Gouache, Casein, Watercolor, Dyes, ... Colored Pencil Explorations ReviewExpands the repertoire of colored pencils by including their use with other media. The result is mixed media at its best. This is not a book for people who need a paint by numbers approach, but it should not be shunned by beginners. There are many demonstrations in the book which take the artist (or would-be artist) by the hand and show how the subject was created, down to a precise list of what materials were use, including brand names of pencils and other media. The book utilized the works of several artists and explained their techniques in very clear language. Yes, some of the techniques are advanced, but this should provide inspiration for a beginner, not discouragement.
For the more advanced artist, the book explodes with ideas for combining a wide variety of media in ways that most of us have not considered previously. I was particularly intrigued with the example of using Mylar in a reverse painting technique. I recommend this book for anyone with artist's block; it will certainly help to "jump-start" your creative engine again.Colored Pencil Explorations Overview

New Acrylics Essential Sourcebook: Materials, Techniques, and Contemporary Applications for Today's Artist ReviewFirst let me caution, this book is in no way for beginners. In fact, its overly technical slant is enough to scare people away from acrylics. I'm only partially kidding. As a well seasoned painter and someone fairly knowledgeable in the field, I found the author's vocabulary a bit daunting at times. Flocculation anybody? Does anyone besides the author of this book know what this word means? Flocculation is when your paint curdles, OK?
That said, this book offers wonderful suggestions on how to achieve some stunning effects in the acrylic arena. But in no way is this book a how to. You'll see a picture with something you want to know more about, and you get one sentence without any further explanation. I found this and other things about this book frustrating. The other kink in the works is that many of the "new generation" of acrylics this author is championing are solely manufactured by Tri Art Acrylics, a company the author consults for.
That being said, the book is beautifully presented and definitely has influenced my artistic approach.

Collage Lost and Found: Creating Unique Projects With Vintage Ephemera ReviewI think this book is an excellent resource for those of us who are new to collage or altered art. Her instructions are clear and complete. The book covers many different projects from greeting cards and soldered jewelry to shrines and collaging onto sheet metal. She even gives directions on making your own chains for the jewelry. I especially like the quick and easy projects like collaging in tiny tins and making magnets out of glass marbles--very nice for gift giving. Her sample art is beautiful, and I didn't find her work to be mostly sepia tones and muted colors as another reviews says. I love vintage so maybe I'm biased.

Angelic Visions: Create Fantasy Art Angels With Watercolor, Ink and Colored Pencil. ReviewHere's a book dedicated to drawing angels by Angela R. Sasser.
The book has four chapters, covering the art materials (primarily colour pencils and watercolor), drawing and designing the characters, creating the background and includes 8 step-by-step demonstrations at the back.
On the character design of angels, you get to learn how to draw the different parts of an angel, things like wings, halos, clothing, weapon and other ornaments. The subject is seems well researched enough, the instructions are clear, and gives useful points to look out for. The basic anatomy lessons aren't too helpful because they are too elementary. I recommend getting a separate figure drawing book to help with figure posing and construction.
The chapter on backgrounds covers drawing of clouds, flowers, creating stone and stained glass textures. There doesn't seem to be a lot of variety when in comes to designing backgrounds for angels. This chapter is quite thin and feels disconnected from the book because the examples shown here, with exception of flowers, aren't really used in other paintings.
Finally, the book ends with 8 detailed painting demonstrations. The tutorials are roughly meant to be followed along - you can draw your own angel and then follow the techniques mentioned. It provides good practice on using watercolour. I don't particularly like the style of watercolour is used here though, but different people prefer different styles.
Overall, this is a decent starter guide if you're looking to draw angels. A figure drawing book is highly recommended to go along with this book - that will give your characters more volume.Angelic Visions: Create Fantasy Art Angels With Watercolor, Ink and Colored Pencil. Overview

The Drawing Bible ReviewI do not know what kind of background the previous reviewer has but as artist and art teacher I highly recommend this book. The idea of valuing it according to price, like some kind of bean counter is absurd.
The book covers the fundamentals and the drawings are superb. It is easy to carry and also serves as a continuous source of style and inspiration.
As for the price it is worth every penny. If you want beautiful though realistic images to act as an ideal and have enough intelligence not to need Parental consent to see the nudes in the book please DISREGARD THE FATUOUS AND INCREDULOUS REVIEW ABOVE.
The book dose exactly what it claims and dose so with great art, style and composition. Craig Nelson is one of the most accomplished draftsman of this era and has made, and shows great choices.
Need to be taken by the hand through everything pertaining to drawing then head for your nearest art school, as no book can do what a serious series of classes in drawing fundamentals can do. However don't trash a perfectly fine and inspirational book for the price or the heck of it.
And, yes I do own the book and am very pleased with it. So are my many students.The Drawing Bible Overview

The Creative Edge: Exercises to Celebrate Your Creative Self ReviewMary Todd Beam's follow-up to her first book expands both creative repertoire and creative experience. I have seen books on creativity that, while fun to explore, have little application for serious works of art. "The Creative Edge" does both. Many of the techniques are new, not just a rehash of all the old ones. Each technique can be used as the focus of a single art work, but the same technique can be combined with others in the book, or with techniques learned elsewhere. For example, it is possible to use her "sparkling ice" technique to create a fascinating abstract, or use it as part of a larger, more representational work.
The section titled "Have a Look: Observe" opens our eyes to looking at familiar objects in a different way, for example the interior of a derelict car, to create interpretive abstracts. I particularly like the section "Finding Figures in a Foil Print" as it not only shows a unique way of using black gesso and foil (the result looks almost like a lithograph) it could also be developed in so many ways - as an abstract, like the examples, or to add texture to a landscape or even a still life. Examples of other artists' use of the techniques provide inspiration as well as additional ideas.
Most of the artwork is done on illustration board. If this is difficult to obtain, or if you do not like the shiny surface, it is possible to use matt board, although this is a little lighter. It does need to be gessoed on both sides and the edges sealed with wax. For a more matte working surface, I find a thin coat of fibre paste on top of the gesso works nicely. (Golden produces an excellent one)
As usual, Mary Todd Beam uses her famed palette of only three colours with amazing success: Quinacridone Crimson, Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold and Turquoise (Pthalo) These create wonderful secondaries, as well as interesting tints and shades when mixed with black or white. It is worthwhile setting aside the old pallette you are comfortable with, and trying something entirely different. Creating Nature in Watercolor: An Artist's Guide ReviewI have just recieved Cathy Johnson's new book, "Creating Nature in Watercolor, an Artists Guide." I sat down and read it through, and found it felt like an beautifully illustrated letter from a good friend, who is encouraging me to join her in her love of nature and creating. The art work is superb of course, as I expected, since I already own several of her books, and recently took one of her wonderful Online Classes...and she has been drawing and painting for her whole life...but I also found much more in it than artwork. She not only shares many, many, many valuable techniques and tips...but they seem unique to her charming way of helping us out with some of the little things that become big things when you dont know how to deal with them. And she adds so many details and makes them all so interesting!
Her 'personal relationship' with nature pulls the reader and artist into a close connection with creation and creating.
It is a book for everyone...beginning and professional artists as well as all who appreciate nature.

Watermedia Painting with Stephen Quiller: The Complete Guide to Working in Watercolor, Acrylics, Gouache, and Casein ReviewI have been waiting for this book for over a year. I heard about it at Stephen Quiller's Summer workshop in Creede, Colorado, June 2007. I have been painting watercolors for a lot of years and have studied, read, drawn, and painted fairly consistently through those years. I have concluded that all aspects of doing art are important to learn--drawing, composition, materials, equipment, and so on. But, once you have gained some competence in these areas, it all comes down to color. Now I have learned about color too, but during the latter part of those years, Quiller's books "Color Choices" and "Painter's Guide to Color" really helped me achieve a quantum leap forward in my use and understanding of color.
Stephen Quiller is an expert and master at painting with watermedia, all kinds, and at mixed watermedia, plein air painting, and color. And these subjects are covered in this book. But I always had a wish, and that was that he would explain his compositional approach. How does he put together his paintings onsite and elsewhere? And here it is. And what a treasure it is!
What I also appreciate is that this book was written by an accomplished and dedicated teacher, who genuinely desires to pass on those valuable lessons he has learned to us struggling artists. And it is written well. I have followed his work and writing for a number of years, and he just keeps getting better. Stephen Quiller is the real thing. He works hard at his art. He knows what he is talking about, big time. His helper at his gallery in Creede (matter, framer, researcher, manager, etc.) Chere Waters told me, during a conversation at the gallery, that every day he is at home and can, Quiller is out painting. That's what it takes, folks. I tell my students, "You want to get good, do it everyday!"
If you want to learn more about watermedia painting from one of the best, whether watercolor, gouache, acrylics, casein, and how they can be combined to advantage; if you want to learn how to plan and develop your paintings well from sketchbook to finished work; if you want to follow the thinking of a master artist--get this book.

Creative Collage Techniques ReviewThere is not much about collage that is not contained in this book. The authors begin with a short history of collage and how to make or find materials to make your own. Later in the book, they even explain how to make your own paper for collage and making collage "supports" or backgrounds using mediums, papers, and natural or found materials.
In an early part of the book, the authors delve into the collage process and give the reader eight projects (of varying difficulty)to try on their own. The directions and illustrations are VERY complete.
The next section deals with collage design, both planning and creating, along with nine projects that are, once again, carefully explained.
The section on mixed-media collage was very good but more for a person who has both artistic AND design ability. NOT ME!!!
Even though many of these projects were beyond my limited capability, I still enjoyed reading about them and looking at the beautiful illustrations. I got lots of ideas from this lovely book.Creative Collage Techniques Overview

Experimental Painting: Inspirational Approaches for Mixed Media Art ReviewThis book is largely an account of Lisa Cyr's journey into the meaning of personal art making and creativity. Cyr describes the development of her own creative philosophy - a large part of the text - sharing some of her artistic discoveries on the way. (At times, the text reads almost like a soliloquy.)
Yes, there are ample examples of her creative use of mixed media, some of which are new and exciting. Cyr also makes innovative use of tools and mediums, the rich illustrations focusing on her melding of near classical realism with impressionistic backgrounds and the use of symbolism through found objects. About one third of the book is given to innovative techniques using explanatory photographs that are accompanied by brief sub-texts. However, if you are wanting a detailed map telling you how to approach your own experimentation(as you find, for example, with Dean Nimmer's 'Art From Intuition') you will not find this approach here.
I give the book 4 stars only because the print font is so small (.8 Ariel at a guess.) Apart from this, I like the book very much, and already find it having a significant influence on my thinking about my own art making. However, it is not possible to do justice to the abstract ideas and concepts in the text in one reading. Cyr goes deep, in a way that other books on paint effects do not. The painting techniques, while innovative, are presented more as artistic metaphor than as a visual end in themselves, as Cyr explains.
The author assumes that the reader already knows basic painting techniques at least. It will also help to have already experimented with different media yourself and to have some idea of your own artistic voice. Cyr herself has a unique signature and style, which is certainly not meant to be replicated. Creative Stamping with Mixed Media Techniques ReviewIf you love rubber stamping and painting on fabric, you need just two books: this one and the author's first, Creating with Paint. I have both books and love them equally-and, more importantly--I USE them extensively in my own artwork.
I have also taken two workshops with the author, Sherrill Kahn, and highly recommend them. Take a workshop with Sherrill if you can! She's a very encouraging, supportive and inspiring teacher, and all of these qualities come across in her two books.
One of my favorite aspects of Creative Stamping is that Sherrill shows you in step-by-step photos how she layers dyes, paint and stamping techniques to arrive at her highly complex fabrics. It's easy once you see how she does it, and that's why Creative Stamping is a must-have for any fabric painters library.
Lots of information, inspiration, and some great how-to projects make Creative Stamping well worth the investment.

The Journal Junkies Workshop: Visual Ammunition for the Art Addict ReviewI met Eric and Dave a couple years ago at one of their week-long visual journal workshops. I was INSTANTLY addicted. I'm an art teacher who had never heard of the term "visual journal" before and thought it might be a great vehicle for student expression as well as a way to keep art in my personal life on a daily basis. Both are true. Since then, I've involved classes with the visual journal and have kept a few of my own. Other people I've known have taken Journal Fodder Junkies workshops, and they too have become addicted.
I think that what sets apart Eric and Dave's approach (and their book) from others is that they truly use the visual journal for an everyday, everything book. Their pages include the mundane, the profound, the beautiful, and the ugly. Well maybe not ugly... but imperfect, unfinished, misspelled. It's such an approachable style, completely unintimidating, something that truly anyone can embrace. I've read many books on visual journals and related subjects such as altered books or mixed media collage, and have been enticed by the imagery only to find that it set the bar too high--it was too perfect. Not good for anyone who feels even a tad bit unartistic, self-conscious, or nervous to begin. Not good for anyone who tries to emulate the how-to steps only to feel they fail miserably and then they give up.
"The Journal Junkies Workshop: Visual Ammunition for the Art Addict" is a great starting point for anyone who is intrigued by the idea of visual journals. The Art of Encaustic Painting: Contemporary Expression in the Ancient Medium of Pigmented Wax ReviewI have long been fascinated by the technique of encaustic painting and this book fills a void in references on the subject. It contains a vast array of detailed information on everything from making your own paints to exhibiting your artwork.
The book starts out with a history of encaustic art. A gallery section then showcases four different portfolios of art including representation, color and pattern, dimension and modular work. Captions include artist, title, materials used, size and date introduced. Artwork is displayed in a variety of sizes. Some of my favorites are a beautiful face by Tony Scherman and the organic looking "Miasma Morph" by Sylvia Netzer, made of wax with pigment fired on ceramic.
The next sections focuses on encaustic materials. It starts out with details on the wax types. A reference chart of all the wax types, their source, composition, properties, melting point, flash point, color range and average price is here too. Information on heating equipment and well as melting and fusing the wax are next. Then pigments and making your own paints is covered. Selecting and caring for brushes is also here. There is even a great section on using materials safely.
Painting preparation and techniques follow. These include information on substrates and grounds with step-by-step instructions on how to make your own. Recipes of rabbit-skin glue and gesso, as well as tips on using them are explained as well. Then techniques and tips for textured, smooth, scraped and incised surfaces accompanied by example artwork are given. There are also details on collage, mixed media, creating artwork on paper and making large-scale pieces. I loved the helpful answers common questions such as what are good beeswax mixes, what wax is best for glazing, how does one get rid of bloom and what do if you get a wax burn?
In the back of the book there are very helpful resource sections including supply sources, galleries, a glossary and bibliography as well as photo credits and an index. This book is an indispensable reference for anyone wanting to learn about and create encaustic art.The Art of Encaustic Painting: Contemporary Expression in the Ancient Medium of Pigmented Wax Overview

Collage Unleashed ReviewThis is quite a fantastic book. If you've been a fan of Sabrina Ward Harrison's books, for example, but couldn't figure out how to achieve those kinds of effects, this book will help you. I'm a novice but there were so many projects and ideas I wanted to try. Actually, it became overwhelming, especially at the end with the more advanced techniques using stitching and bookbinding, but there's plenty here to keep everybody going for a long time. Mainly Bautista shows us how to layer, layer, layer, and reminds us not to worry about finished effects. Also, she's a great fan of "leveraging" her art, which means to make numerous photocopies at various stages and keep the copies so that she always has a ton of stuff to work with and can build on previous ideas with new work.
I started to feel depressed and enervated as I went through the final chapters, but eventually it dawned on me that I had to go make something ... RIGHT NOW! This book is just so stimulating and serves both as inspiration and encouragement, and as an idea sourcebook. Bautista is funny and light, in contrast to some of the self-serious, angst-ridden artists. She believes in experimenting and having fun, and her enthusiasm is wonderfully infectious. Print & Stamp Lab: 52 Ideas for Handmade, Upcycled Print Tools (Lab Series) ReviewDon't judge this book by its simple cover. It's not as elementary as it appears. Certainly, the techniques can be adapted for use in children's art, but the book could be useful also for collage artists wanting to create 2 dimensional texture and even art quilters, using different paint mediums, but applying the same techniques. The instructions are simple, but the applications can be as comlicated as you like.
While Traci Bunkers selects her materials from common household and office products (some of them quite unexpected) it would be possible to venture into using materials from nature such as leaves, seeds and grasses. The author confines her examples largely to small blocks, but it is also possible to apply her ideas to larger formats such as collagraphs.
As the author says, "The gallery is meant to be an inspirational jumping off point to show how everything you have learned can be put together and used artistically on just about any surface imaginable." Her gallery includes examples of printmaking used with stationary, candle holders, book covers, shoes, purses and totes. But you could also use the same printmaking techniques for place mats, cushion covers, floorcloths and mixed media wall hangings.
As an abstract artist, I will be adapting the techniques to create three dimensional effects by stamping various textures into modeling paste.
